Man Utd identify first signing under Michael Carrick, prepared to back new interim manager this month

Manchester United are prepared to back interim manager Michael Carrick in the transfer market.

There has been a fear ever since Ruben Amorim was fired that Manchester United were removing themselves from the currently open transfer window.

Ineos did not want to back Amorim further in the market, deciding against buying more players for his tactical approach, which they had lost faith in.

Michael Carrick is set to be hired as interim manager until the rest of the season, and funds are going to be made available for him this month.

Michael Carrick is the new favourite for the Man Utd interim job, are you happy with this?

Ruben Neves is top target

It is now being reported via The Guardian that Manchester United want to sign Ruben Neves from Al-Hilal to add to Michael Carrick’s squad.

Midfield is the top priority in the transfer market and Neves would bring a wealth of experience into the club.

With months remaining on his contract, Neves could be available for as little as £20 million.

A move for the Portugal international could ask questions about the future of Manuel Ugarte, while Casemiro’s contract expires at the end of the season.

Neves has experience playing in English football with Wolves, and Carrick will know him from United’s clashes with Wolves during his own time on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaching staff.

talkSPORT had reported last week that the Neves to United link was not dead despite the managerial uncertainty.

United In Focus had first reported United’s interest in Neves at the end of September 2025.

United did not back previous interim managers

Manchester United did not back previous interim managers in the transfer market.

No signings were made under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2019, nor with Ralf Rangnick in 2022.

Let’s see if it turns out to be different this time around. With a Champions League spot possibly up for grabs, one player could make an important difference.
