Man Utd could sign star regarded as ‘best ever Saudi Pro League import’ on free transfer, entering his prime years

Manchester United are serious about a potential move for a Saudi Pro League star.

Signing the right midfielders has been a major problem for Manchester United dating back more than a decade.

Ineos will need to address this problem in the upcoming transfer windows, with young prospect Carlos Baleba one of the names linked.

But another more prudent deal could see United move for Al-Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves.

Ruben Neves situation

Ruben Neves left Wolves in 2023 to sign for Al-Hilal for £47 million. He signed a three-year contract, which is now into the final year.

Manchester United’s interest in Neves is long-standing, and still only 28-years-old, the Portuguese midfielder still has plenty to offer.

United were tipped to try and strike an ‘opportunist’ deal for Neves in January, but there is also the intriguing possibility of signing him on a free transfer next summer.

Transfer insider Graeme Bailey tells United In Focus: “Ruben Neves is a fascinating figure and a player Man United have long admired, even before he joined Wolves during his Porto days.

“Now 28, many feel he could be coming into his prime years and he could be available for free in 2026.

“I am told from Al-Hilal sources that they are fighting hard to extend him beyond next year.”

Ruben Neves impact

Bailey explains that Ruben Neves has been impressive in the Saudi Pro League since joining Al-Hilal, where he won the 2023/24 title.

“Ruben Neves is regarded by many as the best ever Pro League import, such has been his high standard since arriving.

“In terms of the Premier League and Man United, he is certainly one who I could see at Old Trafford if he doesn’t sign a new deal. He loved playing in England.”

In 96 games for Al-Hilal, Neves has scored 10 goals and provided 24 assists.

Neves played all 90 minutes in Al-Hilal’s victory at the Club World Cup over Manchester City back in the summer.

While United are expected to target a young midfielder next summer, Neves would be a steadying influence for any new addition, and the entire team.
