Man Utd could finally sign Alphonso Davies, seven years since cancelled Old Trafford trial

Manchester United still have problems at left back and could make a huge signing with 2025 transfer rumours already swirling.

This has been a poor start to the season for Manchester United.

Two wins from the first seven Premier League games just isn’t good enough after Ineos backed Erik ten Hag over the summer.

Five first-team signings arrived over the summer but United are yet to show signs of major improvement.

Ineos have already weighed up Ten Hag’s future but may also be minded to make more significant signings in 2025.

Manchester United want Alphonso Davies

Reports from Germany now suggest that United are interested in more Bayern Munich players.

Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt arrived from Bayern over the summer but three more players are on the radar.

Leon Goretzka and Leroy Sane are being linked with United are also thought to be interested in Alphonso Davies.

The Canadian left back is out of contract at the end of the season and United could land a huge coup by bringing him to Old Trafford.

This would be a deal many years in the making given that United were interested in Davies some time ago.

The Manchester Evening News reported in 2017 that United were planning to take Davies on a three-week trial from Vancouver Whitecaps.

The trial never actually materialised though as Davies instead joined up with Canada’s Olympic team camp and the Whitecaps wouldn’t let him go on trial after that given the start date of the Major League Soccer season.

By the time July 2018 rolled around, United had missed out on Davies as he joined Bayern, where he has become a star as an attacking left back with ‘explosive pace’ as Thomas Muller described him on the official Bundesliga website.

The timing just didn’t work out for United and Davies in the 2017-18 season but he may finally be offered an Old Trafford move in 2025.

Former scout on Davies

This would certainly be an exciting move for United with Davies still having bags of untapped potential at just 23.

United were urged to move for Davies a long time ago.

Former scout Jorge Alvial told the Manchester Evening News in 2020 that he sent over 40 reports to United, urging the club to move for Davies.

“Yes, it was my first player that I recommended to United when they hired me,” said Alvial. “The first time I saw him he was playing at the Dallas Cup tournament and he was a very good player. He was only 14 then, he went back to Vancouver and then when I was watching him on videos with my son, Javier, and said: ‘Wait a second. We remember that player, that is Alphonso.’ And that is when I called,” he added.

United did at least want to take Davies on trial as a teenager but he was simply one who got away at the time.

Perhaps United can finally make a deal happen, but Davies will certainly be a man in demand as he heads towards the end of his Bayern contract.
