Manchester United’s January business might not have kicked off in terms of any incoming transfers but the work behind the scenes always keeps going.

That work has received an update as Man Utd have been informed of the asking price for a player they have been chasing for the last two years.

Dubbed by his once-manager as “one of the world’s greatest talents“, Zion Suzuki could have joined the club for a fraction of the £40 million price on his head now.

Nevertheless, if United are as high on him as the rest of the footballing world seems to be, even that price could age to become a bargain eventually.

United have been linked to Suzuki since before they signed Andre Onana to keep that first-choice goalkeeper place.

At the time, Suzuki had only played in Japan so not taking a plunge on him by getting him under the Old Trafford lights was understandable.

However, United could have signed him and sent him on loan, or at least negotiated some sort of first-option for the player which they didn’t. He eventually joined Parma via a spell in Belgium with St. Truiden.

United were linked to the player both times but didn’t make the deal happen, a stance they could soon come to regret.

Suzuki has impressed all at Parma and is starting to make good on his “one of the world’s greatest talents” moniker, being dubbed ‘world-class’ next.

Talksport report that Suzuki is now rated at £40 million, just six months after joining Parma in a deal worth around £8 million including add-ons.

United will have to contend with a bidding war for Suzuki as well, with the likes of Bayern Munich and Chelsea interested in his services next summer.

Man Utd should be ruthless if Zion Suzuki convinces them

It is worth saying that in Andre Onana, United have a secure first-choice goalkeeper who has kept on improving after a rocky start at the club.

Even Altay Bayindir had a redemption game against Arsenal recently and with the likes of Radek Vitek impressing on loan, and Elyh Harrison back training with the first-team, the goalkeeping department doesn’t need urgent reinforcements.

However, if United are completely convinced by Suzuki who, at 22, has his best days ahead of him, then United shouldn’t be afraid of being ruthless.

They should buy Suzuki and let Onana and him battle it out for the No.1 spot and the winner gets to stay at United, or leave if they want to remain first-choice.

That all depends upon multiple factors like how good United think Suzuki will be and how much they can afford to spend on a position that doesn’t need immediate attention.

Ultimately, the upcoming summer could well be the last time Suzuki is attainable if he joins an elite European side.
