Marcus Rashford’s future remains uncertain despite a title-winning loan spell at Barcelona, with former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho thought to be waiting in the wings should he return to Real Madrid.
Although Barcelona seem unwilling to take up the £26 million option to sign Marcus Rashford at the end of his loan, that hasn’t stopped speculation over a watered-down deal that would see him remain at Camp Nou for another season – potentially on loan again.
United have been irritated by Barcelona’s stance on the matter for months, but the imminent departure of Robert Lewandowski should help free up some funds.
The best-case scenario for United would be a clean break from Rashford. Ineos don’t want to be paying his wages next season.

Jose Mourinho could move for Marcus Rashford
There could be an interesting twist in the Rashford saga this summer.
It would be ideal for United if Barcelona faced pressure from other top European clubs for Rashford. Not only could that force them into a permanent deal, but it would also mean the forward will have other options.
According to Miguel Delaney’s Inside Football Newsletter, as per The Independent, sources close to the situation believe Jose Mourinho could go for Rashford if he returns to Real Madrid as manager.
Delaney wrote: “If there is significant change, though, some sources close to the situation say Mourinho may add even more intrigue by going for Marcus Rashford.
“It was reported by the Independent on Thursday that Barcelona face protracted re-negotiation with Manchester United on the forward.
“Mourinho has an existing good relationship with Rashford and there is a feeling he would love to do it for two reasons: one to get a good player he knows; two to already cause disruption as well as a few problems for Barcelona.”

An offer from Real Madrid would test Marcus Rashford’s loyalty
Although Real Madrid could simply take advantage of Barcelona’s financial situation, a proposal to join Los Blancos would question Rashford’s loyalty to Barcelona.
Rashford has made it clear he is keen to stay at Barcelona, a club he described as a dream in the past.
Those quotes would look questionable if Rashford were to join Real Madrid in the summer.
Mourinho could also be doing United a massive favour by signalling an interest in Rashford. It’s a different story altogether if Real Madrid formalises their apparent interest.
