Incident involving Bruno Fernandes and Arsenal could force Ruben Amorim to break Man Utd promise

Manchester United rallied against the odds and beat Arsenal in the Third Round of the FA Cup last weekend.

Despite taking the lead, the Red Devils became the tie’s underdogs after Diogo Dalot was sent off for a poorly timed challenge on Gabriel Martinelli.

And although Gabriel quickly equalised, Altay Bayindir was United’s hero after he saved a 70th-minute from Martin Odegaard and denied Declan Rice minutes later.

Even though they were up against it for over an hour, Ruben Amorim’s men won on penalties though.

And it isn’t just a place in the FA Cup’s Fourth Round that Sunday’s tie against United could have cost Arsenal…

Bruno Fernandes collision changes Arsenal’s transfer plans

Bruno Fernandes broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute following an assist from Alejandro Garnacho.

The Portuguese midfielder was also responsible for another key incident — Gabriel Jesus’ potentially season-ending injury.

The Arsenal striker was fouled by Fernandes in the 39th minute, resulting in a yellow card for the United captain.

Clearly in pain, Jesus was stretchered off the Emirates pitch and, it was later confirmed he had ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), and will be out for several months.

Jesus’ unfortunate injury is set to impact Arsenal’s transfer plans, which, ironically, could also affect United’s.

Last weekend’s injury to Jesus, as well as the Gunners also being without Bukayo Saka, now means Arsenal need to sign another striker. Mikel Arteta is a fan of Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo but also has Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres high on his shortlist.

The prolific Sweden international is set to leave Lisbon in the coming windows and is likely to return to England following previous spells at Brighton and Coventry.

However, although United have also been linked with signing Gyokeres due to his connection to Amorim, the United manager has already promised he won’t poach Sporting Lisbon’s players before the end of the season out of respect.

The 39-year-old may have to go back on his word though…

Ruben Amorim could break Man United transfer promise

Arsenal’s desperation is set to accelerate their transfer plans. Even though Arteta’s preference would be to not make a marquee signing in the winter window, Jesus’ injury leaves him little choice.

According to L’Equipe, the Gunners are not against triggering Gyokeres’ £84 million (€100 million) release clause this month.

Knowing this, United’s failure to act could see Amorim miss out on a player he would’ve hoped to be reunited with later on in the year.

United’s owners are continuing to work on deals to sell players to raise funds, including Marcus Rashford, who wants to join Barcelona, and should the club comply with Profit and Sustainability regulations, may then be asked by Amorim to set up a reunion with his former number nine.

Sorry Sporting fans.
