What Marcus Rashford is willing to do to leave Man Utd speaks volumes – but there’s a catch

It is no secret that Manchester United must sell players to help balance their books so the January transfer window could see at least one high profile star moved on.

The Red Devils must raise funds to comply with the Premier League’s rules on Profit and Sustainability (PSR).

The likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho are available for transfer because a deal for either, or both, would represent 100 per cent profit on the books due to their homegrown statuses.

Marcus Rashford, a United academy graduate, has also been told he can leave, although this decision is more influenced by his continued poor form misaligning with his huge salary.

Interestingly though, despite Rashford not being part of Ruben Amorim’s plans, the misfiring forward’s transfer preference could indirectly help his current employers and their need for financial compliance.

Marcus Rashford transfer decision could help Man United

Even though multiple clubs, including AC Milan, are interested in signing Rashford, the Englishman’s preference is to move to Spain.

In favour of a switch to Barcelona, Rashford, according to Football Transfers, wants to team up with Hansi Flick at the Nou Camp for the second half of the season.

Here’s how Barcelona’s attacking options could look with Rashford included…

Although a loan move more likely, Sir Jim Ratcliffe would still prefer to reduce costs, and despite Rashford being one of United’s highest-earners, the forward is willing to reduce his salary if it means completing his preferred transfer.

Rashford currently earns £375,000-a-week (Capology), and although United will still be expected to pay a significant portion, any kind of reduction would be a bonus and help go toward meeting PSR’s requirements.

Time is of the essence

Although all parties will be keen for an agreement to be reached, there are still a lot of moving parts that need to come together before Rashford can leave Old Trafford.

And knowing the clock is ticking, Rashford has told Barcelona they have until the end of the day on the 15th of January, 2025, to strike a deal. Rashford’s strict deadline is out of fear his representatives wouldn’t have enough time to agree a move elsewhere before the close of the window.

At the time of writing, there is just under three weeks left before the mid-season closes, so for Rashford, time is of the essence if he is to reignite his faltering career before the start of next season.
