Ineos’ first signing of 2025 looks likely to be 17-year-old wonderkid Diego Leon from Cerro Porteno in Paraguay.
It is a transfer perfectly in line with the recruitment philosophy from new kingmaker at Carrington, Jason Wilcox and also the director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell.
Before Ineos had even taken charge of a transfer window at Manchester United, the plan was clear from Sir Jim Ratcliffe – as he stated as an example he would rather sign the next Kylian Mbappe rather than the man himself.
We saw this in action last summer, with Sekou Kone and Chido Obi being particularly shrewd and exciting additions, while Leny Yoro also represented the same type of signing – albeit at a much higher price point.
Now, the most recent name on this growing list seems to be on the verge of signing for the club after a whirlwind week of rumours. This is as United are closing in on Diego Leon.

Manchester United went above and beyond to sign Diego Leon
The name Diego Leon was first mentioned in relation to a United move back in October and at the time both Arsenal and Man City were also keen.
However, United have ultimately won the battle to acquire the supremely talented Leon, who is viewed among the very best 17-year-olds worldwide.
In order to win the race, now it was been reported the lengths United scouts went to in order to watch Leon as much as possible.
Paraguayan journalist Pedro Torres explained for Tigo Sports that United’s pursuit of Leon began in September, as Ineos sent scouts to Paraguay.
However not only did they watch Leon in action in games for Cerro Porteno, but also took in training sessions and met members of Leon’s entourage.
An impression was clearly made as he chose United in the end, but the fact United went to such lengths is a telling sign of how highly Leon is rated.
Leon now handed first Paraguay U20 call-up
This week will have undoubtedly been an incredible one for United’s newest addition, however, his journey in England does not start for another six months.
Before then, Leon will have plenty of games for Porteno and has now had international duties added to his list of games to take part in.
Ahead of the 2025 South American Championship which runs from January 23rd to February 16th, Leon has been named in the Paraguay U20 squad, his first-ever call-up.
What a week for Leon, next up could be the announcement of his move to United – with the deal done under the agreement it will go through after his 18th birthday.
