Manchester United’s first signing of 2025 looks on the verge of completion, with Diego Leon set to sign from Cerro Porteno.
Dan Ashworth’s exit from Old Trafford this week rocked the footballing world, after just five months as sporting director.
This has left Jason Wilcox as the kingmaker at Manchester United, taking over from Ashworth.
The shake-up in Manchester United’s footballing structure led to questions about how recruitment could be altered going forward.
Well, the club did not wait long to address this, nearing the completion of the first signing of 2025, days later.
United look set to sign Diego Leon in a deal which sees him join up in July after his 18th birthday. Now, the youngster’s thoughts over the move have been revealed by his mother.

Diego Leon is convinced he’s ready for Manchester United
This week has seen the story of Leon and United develop at an incredible rate. Now, the deal has been given the ‘here we go’, as United are arranging Leon’s Old Trafford visit.
Earlier this week, Leon spoke out amid the rumours, stressing his agent was handling everything and he could not speak about the rumours.
Now, as quoted by Paraguayan outlet Futbol Club on X, Leon’s mother, Brigida Blanco, has revealed how the 17-year-old is feeling about the move.
“Diego is calm, I asked him if he wanted to go and he told me it’s every footballer’s dream. He’s convinced he can go, he wants to go.”
Leon clearly has confidence in himself, to take the massive leap to leave his home country, Paraguay, at such a young age says a lot about who he is and bodes well for his chances of success.
Leon set for five year contract at Manchester United
Upon the deal being completed, Leon will make history, becoming the first-ever Paraguayan to play for United. The young left-back will long-term be competing with Harry Amass for the future wing-back berth.
According to Paraguayan journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, Leon is expected to sign a five-year deal with United – which runs through until 2030.
By this stage the talent who is expected to cost an initial £3.2m, and a further £3.2m in add-ons, could be United’s – and hopefully Amorim’s – starting wing-back.
At £6.4m all in, Leon is incredibly low risk and there are practically no downsides to this deal.
