Diego Leon is on the verge of becoming the first Paraguayan to sign for Manchester United.

Ever since Ineos arrived at Manchester United, more emphasis has been put on signing young talent, as seen with Leny Yoro and Chido Obi in the summer.

Leon, 17, looks set to become the next youngster to join United as the club looks to build for a brighter future.

One way to prepare for the future is by signing the best young players from each continent. It looks like United are doing that now in South America as well as the UK, which bodes well for upcoming transfer windows.

With Jason Wilcox leading proceedings on the recruitment side of things, this means that the scouting network is finally being listened to. Recommendations went ignored in recent years as United missed out on too many talents to count.

Ineos don’t want to make the same mistake, which is why they are scouting for the best young talent across the world. It helps to have a prestigious academy to welcome these promising players.

Manchester United reach verbal agreement for Diego Leon

It’s exciting to see Manchester United pro-active in the transfer market for once, signing players early on, regardless of their age and experience.

Leon responded to United links when he stressed that everything was being handled by his agent.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, United have reached a verbal agreement to sign Leon from Cerro Porteno.

United will pay an initial fee of $4 million plus $1 million in add-ons and over $3.5m based on the player’s future performances.

Leon will arrive at United in July 2025.

Romano understands that United will try to plan the left-back’s trip to Manchester in order for the player to visit Old Trafford and Carrington ahead of his formal move.

Leon can help fix a problem at Manchester United

Although United need to wait for Leon to become 18 before he can join the club, it still shows willingness of the club’s part to address the existing problems at left-back.

Those problems stem from our left-backs being injured all the time.

For instance, Luke Shaw has made just three appearances this season and Tyrell Malacia has only returned from a long-term injury absence.

Ruben Amorim and the coaching staff need more to work with in the left-back department.

Leon is inexperienced so I wouldn’t be surprised if another left-back became a target in January or beyond.

Quality as well as cover is required at left-back.
