Man Utd must sign £26m ‘future world class’ goalkeeper as Andre Onana successor – he would fix major issue

Heading into 2025, Manchester United’s list of transfer demands is only increasing with a new shot-stopper recently making its way onto Jason Wilcox’s list.

Ineos’ first year in charge of Manchester United has been full of ups and downs, however, ultimately Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team still have it all to do.

The appointment of Ruben Amorim is one decision the club got spot on – as much as it doesn’t look like it right now.

However, keeping Erik ten Hag so long and allowing his style to dictate the summer transfer window is a major mistake in a footballing sense.

So now, with days remaining in 2024, Manchester United must be planning an overhaul with only six of Amorim’s players safe according to reports.

This included Andre Onana at the time, but the perception of the Cameroonian is now changing rapidly.

Guillaume Restes should be Ineos’ No.1 choice to replace Andre Onana

With goalkeeping becoming a pressing issue at Old Trafford, with Onana and Altay Bayindir both struggling to impress, a new name could soon be staking a claim.

Botafogo’s Copa Libertadores No.1 John Victor has been linked with United in recent weeks.

While more recently Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lassens has found himself on United’s shortlist. Another could also be long-term target Zion Suzuki who continues to impress in Italy.

However, neither of these would be our pick for the successor to Onana – with Toulouse’s Guillaume Restes a far more fitting profile for United’s current philosophy.

Restes has been labelled as a ‘future world-class goalkeeper’ by Rising Stars XI on X – and everything around the player points toward this being correct.

It is a move akin to signing Leny Yoro – with the French goalkeeper widely perceived to be the next great goalkeeper coming through the ranks.

At just 19, signing Restes now and giving him a season or two to grow into the role would be perfect.

Restes would solve the biggest problem Manchester United are having with Onana

Under Amorim, very few of the goals United are conceding are through the defence being cut apart and out-performed.

Instead, a lot of the problems are down to how error-prone Onana has been.

Well, this is a problem Restes may be very well equipped to solve as this season in 15 games, he has yet to have an error leading to a goal.

This would be a welcome change from the issues we are seeing weekly from Onana – with a transfer value of £26m according to CIES, it would also be a cheap solution with Barcelona also linked.

However, Restes is probably not quite consistent enough to be United’s No.1 immediately, which could mean he would be better used as an understudy for the time being if signed.
