Fabrizio Romano shares intriguing update on Napoli interest in Scott McTominay and talks with Sofyan Amrabat

Manchester United still have a huge decision to make over Scott McTominay before the transfer window slams shut next Saturday.

Scott McTominay has attracted interest from Fulham and Napoli this summer, but United have decided to hold onto the Scottish international so far.

Fulham had two bids rejected for McTominay, with the second worth around £20million. United are holding out for an offer between £25-£30million.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Napoli have also bid £21million (€25m) for McTominay, but United also rejected that offer despite McTominay “dying to be trained” by Antonio Conte.

Despite the uncertainty around his future, McTominay was named as a substitute in the matchday squad against Brighton and he came off the bench for the final 10 minutes of the 2-1 defeat.

Romano has now shared a new update on McTominay’s future and it includes former red Sofyan Amrabat.

United are still working on a deal for Manuel Ugarte, and if they finalise a deal for the PSG midfielder then that could pave the way for McTominay’s exit.

However, that would still require a club to meet United’s £25million asking price.

According to Romano’s latest update, Napoli remain interested in McTominay with the Italian club keen to sign two new midfielders this summer.

Via CaughtOffside, Romano said “Napoli will sign two midfielders, now they have to decide who.

“They spoke with Amrabat, and though they had a bid (€25million) rejected for McTominay, their interest remains strong.

“They have an agreement in principle for Billy Gilmour but are still waiting on the final green light to confirm his medical and travel. A decision will be made soon, but both McTominay and Gilmour remain on Napoli’s list.”

Scott McTominay or Sofyan Amrabat?

It seems Napoli will have to decide whether to continue their push for McTominay or instead sign former United midfielder Amrabat. Whoever they choose will presumably partner Gilmour at Napoli.

Ultimately, the decision over McTominay’s future will come down to whether United can source a new midfield signing of their own.

Kobbie Mainoo needs a long-term partner in midfield who can replace the aging Casemiro, frankly Ugarte fits the bill much more than McTominay.

If another bid arrives from Italy, United may finally accept.
