Ruben Amorim has so far batted away questions regarding the transfer market as they provide an unnecessary distraction to an already unfocused group of players.
However, it is impossible to look at the current Man Utd squad and not clearly identify a couple of positions where strengthening is sorely needed.
Left wing-back is the primary one, with a revolving door of contenders trying their hand at making that position their own to no avail.
Strikers haven’t been very clinical either outside of Rasmus Hojlund, who doesn’t get enough chances to score which is a different problem altogether.
However, an area that is flying under the radar but is arguably the most important in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 is where United seem to have identified their key target, as per Fabrizio Romano.

Amorim has rotated his team nearly every game as he tries to keep up the team’s intensity without compromising on the players’ fitness.
“Intensity” has been the buzzword of his tenure so far and the drop-off from players is clearly visible once they run out of steam, so demanding is his system.
Therefore, it makes sense that they are targeting one of Europe’s most intense players for a position that requires the hardest running in Amorim’s system.
That position is midfield and the player is Atalanta’s Brazilian international, Ederson, interest in whom has been confirmed by Fabrizio Romano.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said that Man Utd are one of many clubs to have an interest in the combative midfielder, adding that he’s perfect for Amorim.
He said: “I can guarantee to you that several clubs around Europe are monitoring Ederson, Man Utd are one of them. For sure, Man Utd like the player.
“Ruben Amorim wants intensity and when you think of intensity, Ederson is probably one of the most intense midfielders around Europe.
“He’s running for three players, top, top player. January transfer window will be really complicated but the feeling is that Ederson could leave in the summer. United have sent their scouts several times to scout Ederson. He has many fans around Europe.”

United’s interest in Ederson further clears up what they will be looking to do in the summer transfer window next season already.
A left wing-back was always on the agenda and that has now been joined by a midfielder and understandably so.
Christian Eriksen is set to leave the club and Casemiro is not getting any younger so refreshing that position is of absolute necessity which Ederson’s arrival will do.
Then there’s numbers in defence, where Amorim will have to choose between promoting from within, because there’s no first-choice slot open, or buying a rotational player.
A striker might be needed depending upon how Joshua Zirkzee performs between now and the end of the season but things haven’t looked too good so far for the Dutchman.
Those four positions should form the crux of the transfer business next summer for United because the focus should be more on selling players anyway.
