Ajax goalkeeper and England youth international Charlie Setford admits he would ‘choose’ Manchester United over Liverpool if given the pick of the Premier League.
Their fingers burned by the struggles of Antony and Andre Onana, and to a lesser extent Sofyan Amrabat, Manchester United might not be rushing to raid the Eredivisie again in the near future. Particularly with Erik ten Hag expected to lose some of his power in the recruitment department once INEOS bring in a new sporting director.
For the time being, then, a switch to Old Trafford is merely a pipe dream for England U18 shot stopper Charlie Setford. Not that his focus is on the transfer market right now, of course, the 19-year-old looking instead to make the step up from Ajax’s reserves to the first-team.

Charlie Setford highly rated in England and Holland
“I focus on the Jong Ajax. (But) it is not expected that I will continue to play in that team for the next four years. It seems more logical to me to be loaned out for a year in the future, to a nice league, to gain experience,” Setford tells Ajax Live, via Voetbal Primeur.
“That’s the most important thing for a goalkeeper. It is a tough job, both physically and mentally.”
It’s a tough job indeed, but someone has got to do it. And Setford, born in the Netherlands but capped by the Young Lions, is doing it pretty well, his stand-out performances for Ajax’s youngsters catching the eye of Roma, Borussia Dortmund, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur (Daily Mail).
There is one club that stands out a mile as far as Setford is concerned, however, with the teenager relishing the prospect of continuing Edwin van der Sar’s Old Trafford legacy.
Manchester United over Liverpool
“England is the place to be. That’s the best league in the world,” he adds. “It would be between Liverpool and Manchester United. If I have to choose, it would be Manchester United, in the Theatre of Dreams.
“Just like Edwin van der Sar.”
Man United’s current number one, Andre Onana, also made his name in the Dutch capital. Onana’s imminent departure to the African Cup of Nations should open the door for fellow glovesman Altay Bayindir to make his long-awaited Red Devils website.
