Ed Woodward could already be on the phone to Bayern Munich.
German newspaper BILD report Thomas Muller wants out of the club, having been just a fringe player this season to date.
Muller, 30, is a World Cup winner and a player United have tried to sign before.

Sky Sports reported that United had a bid of £85 million for Muller rejected by Bayern in 2016.
While he is certainly past his peak, United’s need for a striker coupled with Muller’s desire to leave has fans predicting a January move will be inevitable…
For signing Muller
At 30, Muller has plenty of football still left in him. He’s a long way off retirement.
Muller is a natural goalscorer who will raise standards, and score the scrappy goals Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial cannot.
He could teach United’s forwards a few tricks of the trade, and be invaluable for Mason Greenwood to learn from.
Muller can play on the right wing too, a problem position for United. He provided 14 assists in 2017/18, showing he is more than a goalscorer.

Against signing Muller
Bastian Schweinsteiger’s retirement shone a light on a similar failed transfer from United.
The German was brought in from Bayern past his peak, the right signing at the wrong time, needed years earlier. Have United learned nothing?
United do need a new striker, but a younger solution should be targeted instead of the veteran.
Muller has no goals this season so far and scored only six times last campaign. Does he still have what it takes?
The last time he reached double figures in the Bundesliga was 2015/16, when he scored 20 goals and prompted United to put in a big bid. Bayern may wish they had cashed in.
