Defender that Ruben Amorim has been tipped to sign at Man United set for new release clause

The January transfer window will be Ruben Amorim’s first opportunity to improve his Manchester United squad.

Ruben Amorim has made an unbeaten start to life as Manchester United head coach after masterminding a 4-0 win over Everton on Sunday afternoon.

However, Amorim has been keen to not get carried away and repeatedly made the point that his players are still learning and adapting to his 3-4-3 system.

Some are adapting better than others, and Amorim has already made it clear that some positions will need strengthening in future transfer windows.

After the draw to Ipswich, Amorim told United chiefs a new left wing-back is needed – something the club are already working towards getting done in 2025.

Alongside a new left wing-back, United could also dip into the market for a new centre-back. Amorim plays with three centre-backs so extra depth will be needed if the likes of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof leave in 2025.

United have been linked with Benfica’s Tomas Araujo, who has replaced another United target Antonio Silva in the starting lineup recently.

Araujo has made 14 appearances for Benfica this season, including nine in Liga Portugal where they trail by five points to Amorim’s former side Sporting Lisbon.

It is reported that Benfica want around £50million to sell the 22-year-old star next year.

Araujo has attracted plenty of interest from the Premier League with Crystal Palace launching a bid for him over the summer which was rejected by Benfica.

Chelsea have also shown an interest in a potential move, but Benfica are holding firm for a big-money offer.

To protect Araujo’s value, Portuguese outlet O Jogo report that the towering defender is set to sign a new deal at Benfica.

Araujo’s current contract runs until 2028 but the new deal will extend his stay until 2029 and introduce a new release clause worth 100 million Euros (£83million).

Benfica could still accept a lower offer for Araujo in 2025, but a new contract ensures they can remain in control of the transfer situation and sell on their terms. It may make a deal more difficult for United.
