Manchester United’s chances of signing Conor Gallagher have been given a boost after his change of heart at Atletico Madrid.
Signing a central midfielder is a top priority for Manchester United in 2026 and Conor Gallagher is among the players on Ineos’ transfer shortlist.
United showed interest in Gallagher over the summer and even enquired about the 25-year-old in the final days of the transfer window.
However, Ineos were happy to wait until 2026 to reinforce the midfield. The January budget could be tight, making Gallagher a likely target ahead of the likes of Elliot Anderson or Carlos Baleba.
While there are concerns over Gallagher and how he would strengthen United, the English midfielder appears keen to make the switch.

Conor Gallagher would prefer to join Man United
Transfer expert Graeme Bailey has exclusively spoken to United in Focus about a potential deal for Gallagher.
“Gallagher has become increasingly frustrated at Atletico. He is settled in the Spanish capital but he firmly believes he could and should be in contention for England. That is not going to happen without playing.
“Gallagher is aware of the interest and I’m told that United is an appealing option to him.
Who is your dream Manchester United signing in 2026?
“United are aware that other clubs are showing an interest, and they will have a decision to make in the coming weeks ahead of the January window.
“Despite being pleased with their form in recent weeks, belief within the club is that additional holding midfield options are required and Gallagher could very well offer that.”
Gallagher previously maintained a confidence that he could forge his way into becoming a first-team regular under Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid. However, things have not turned out the way he hoped – he has been limited to just two starts in La Liga.
United have been kept informed on Gallagher’s situation and would only make a move for him if he wanted to leave. Now that confirmation is coming through, a move is increasingly likely.
Conor Gallagher would go against Ruben Amorim promise
Gallagher would be open to joining United on loan, likely until the end of the 2025/26 season.
Amorim wants an athletic midfielder and Gallagher certainly fits the bill, but his arrival would almost certainly push Kobbie Mainoo out of the picture at Old Trafford.

Additionally, Amorim said he doesn’t want short-term signings at United, and Gallagher feels like just that.

United have become overly reliant on an ageing Casemiro this season, but bringing in Gallagher for six months feels like a short-term solution to a long-term problem.
Amorim wants to give Mainoo more minutes, but bringing in Gallagher on loan only increases his competition and limits his opportunities.
