This weekend sees Manchester United face Liverpool at Anfield, a venue which hasn’t seen the Red Devils win since 2016.

It is a massive clash against Liverpool this weekend, as a victory for Manchester United would see Ruben Amorim have a watershed moment and a platform to build upon.

Picking up three points won’t be easy, as United are likely without Noussair Mazraoui, which makes a tricky task even more difficult.

United haven’t won at Anfield since 2016; however, this is a huge opportunity to do so, with Liverpool on a three-match losing streak.

Looking back to the last time United managed to taste victory away to Liverpool in a 1-0 triumph, we find a team with not a single player still playing for the club.

Manchester United’s XI vs Liverpool in 2016

So, how did United line up for the last win at Anfield? Here is exactly how and where each player is now.

David de Gea

In goal, it was David de Gea who was at the top of his game in 2016, universally considered one of the best in the world.

Now, De Gea is Fiorentina’s goalkeeper, having only left Old Trafford in 2023.

Matteo Darmian

At right back, Matteo Darmian was in the midst of an impressive season at United for this game.

Now, Darmian plays for Inter Milan and even featured at the Club World Cup last summer.

Chris Smalling

In central defence, Chris Smalling was in the starting line-up. Despite how he regressed in recent years, back in 2016, Smalling was a very solid defender.

Currently, the Englishman plays for Al-Fayha in the Saudi Pro League. Smalling had a disastrous debut for the club, but at 35, he is likely on his way to retirement now.

Daley Blind

Partnering with Smalling was Dutchman Daley Blind, who joined the club in 2014 under Louis van Gaal.

Currently, Blind is rolling back the years for Girona in La Liga, impressing despite his advancing years.

Ashley Young

Former United captain, Ashley Young, was the starting left-back for the Red Devils here.

Young now plays for Ipswich Town under Kieran McKenna’s management.

Morgan Schneiderlin

In centre-midfield, Morgan Schneiderlin was a starter for United in the last Anfield victory. Schneiderlin retired from football in 2024.

Marouane Fellaini

Alongside Schneiderlin in midfield, Marouane Fellaini was United’s other starter and back then he was incredibly underrated.

Hindsight has led to belief that Fellaini was under utilised at United, and he is now retired.

Jesse Lingard

On the right, Jesse Lingard started for United, being an exciting academy talent at the time.

Currently, Lingard plays for FC Seoul in South Korea and is their club captain.

Ander Herrera

In attacking midfield was cult hero Ander Herrera, with the Spaniard a player fans adored.

Herrera currently plays for Boca Juniors in Argentina.

Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial was the left winger in this game for United and at this point he was one of the world’s biggest wonderkids.

Martial is now struggling at Pachuca in Mexico having departed AEK Athens.

Wayne Rooney

Finally, leading the line was captain and club legend Wayne Rooney, who happened to score the goal that claimed victory against Liverpool.

Rooney is now retired and a pundit for the BBC.
