A longstanding Sir Alex Ferguson myth at Old Trafford that people thought was fake, but turned out to be true

Sir Alex Ferguson’s remarkable legacy at Manchester United included one legend that left fans questioning if it was true or not — and it very much was real.

The 84-year-old iconic former Manchester United manager ended his historic 26-year reign at Old Trafford in 2013 after the Red Devils’ last Premier League title win.

Sir Alex Ferguson is widely recognised as one of the best managers of all time after his impact at both Premier League club Man Utd and Scottish side Aberdeen.

Following his arrival at the Red Devils in 1986, the legendary Scot’s tenure at Old Trafford yielded a wide variety of different myths and legends that spawned over time.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s chewing gum was kept in place for Man Utd tours at Old Trafford

Manchester United fans were all too familiar with the sight of the camera cutting to the Old Trafford dugout and seeing Sir Alex Ferguson chew away on his gum.

It would often be a strange experience to not witness the former Aberdeen and United boss grinding his teeth away on gum during the 90 minutes of a football match.

Ferguson’s signature gum-chewing became so strongly associated with him that it was integrated into the Man Utd tour of the iconic Old Trafford stadium.

That is according to BBC Sport ‘resident fact-checker’ Karel Prince, who shared the fact about Ferguson’s gum during his podcast with co-host Anita Abayomi.

“They used to leave the chewing gum, like in the technical area on the tour,” he said on the Karel Prince: Lie Detector show, as per BBC Sport.

“Like, if you go on the stadium tour, you can see the chewing gum.”

Responding to Karel Prince’s admission, Anita Abayomi asked: “That’s the chewed-up chewing gum?”

Prince then added: “Yeah, like Fergie’s chewing gum.”

Abayomi could not hold back her feelings after she learned that Man Utd had hilariously preserved Ferguson’s legacy — at that time at least — with his gum.

“Okay, I’m so sorry,” she said, before adding: “They need to sort that out. That’s disgusting.”

During their entertaining exchange around Ferguson, Prince pointed out the obvious fact that the United legend’s gum would clearly not be part of the tour anymore.

“It’s probably gone now,” he responded.

“Like, he’s not been manager for 13 years, I think…”

According to the Manchester Evening News in 2019, the final piece of gum that Ferguson chewed as Man Utd boss was sold on eBay for a whopping £390,000.
