MMA star Conor McGregor caused a stir last month when he said he wanted to buy Manchester United.
McGregor’s declaration came amid the Super League fallout, on the same night Ed Woodward resigned.
Since then, it’s all gone quiet on the McGregor front. Was he just shooting from the hip and backing a bold statement he could not back up?
McGregor was asked about potentially buying the club last night during a Twitter Q&A, whether he was serious.
He responded by saying he would be interested in owning a ‘sports team’ and feels he could do ‘big things’.
As far as United went, this was his chance to back up his comments, and it felt like he was backtracking a little.
Too much?
It would cost an estimated £4billion to buy United, The Times recently reported.
McGregor is not even worth £1 billion, so while his ambition is admirable, he won’t be able to afford it.
Last month he did sell a major stake in his whiskey company for around £500 million, The Independent reported. This was after his declaration about United.
It’s hard to see him realistically raising enough capital to buy out the Glazers, and he may be better off looking towards Celtic.
The only way forward where United are concerned, is if he partners up with another group, as a frontman to a bid. Whether he would then have the control to do as he liked, is another matter.
