Marcus Rashford is on course to rejoin Manchester United’s first-team group for pre-season training next month. It puts the club in a sticky situation.
Since falling out of favour under Ruben Amorim towards the end of the 2024 calendar year, Marcus Rashford has been sent on loan to Aston Villa and Barcelona.
United have repeatedly briefed that Rashford is available at the right price, with Barcelona passing on the option to sign the England international in a permanent deal ahead of the June 15 deadline.
New reports suggest United are open to reintegrating Rashford into the first team. Here are three reasons why United are now in a sticky situation.

What does success for Man Utd look like for you in 2026/27?
While it's early days (we need new signings) – tell us what you think United should be aiming for?
Man Utd’s preference has been financially motivated
Earlier this month, it was reported that Rashford is unlikely to play for United again.
That is because United have been trying to sell Rashford for over a year, as that would significantly help reduce the club’s wage bill.
There is no denying that Rashford is still a very good player, after scoring 14 goals and registering 14 assists in a season that saw him win the La Liga title, but keeping him would prove costly.
According to The Athletic, Rashford earns £325,000-per-week at United. That is before any bonuses are paid.
This means a potential U-turn from United could rule out signing one of the players the club has been considering this summer.
Michael Carrick may think he can get the best out of Marcus Rashford
Michael Carrick has known Rashford for over a decade.
From being a teammate to one of Rashford’s coaches, it would be fair to say Carrick would be a good judge of character.
Carrick will know not only playing with Rashford in his earlier years, but also helping the forward as a coach under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
There is a strong possibility that while Carrick may sympathise with Ineos for taking a financial stance, he may feel that he can get Rashford back to his best at United.
United would have bridges to build if Carrick decided he wanted Rashford back in the team next season.
Marcus Rashford evidently does not want to return to Man Utd – There is no way back for him surely?!

Marcus Rashford’s potential destinations are limited
Rashford’s wages will be off-putting for many clubs potentially interested in a transfer.
It would be hard to see one of the Italian clubs afford such a deal, and reports state Rashford isn’t interested in playing for another Premier League club.
Bayern Munich have been linked to Rashford, but it remains to be seen if they will spend the money required for a player likely to be a back-up option to Luis Diaz and Harry Kane.
With Rashford’s list of potential destinations limited, something eventually has to give. His future now hinges on either holding peace talks with United or taking a significant pay cut to force a move elsewhere.
