Jacob Devaney’s loan at St Mirren has now come to a successful conclusion as he played a key role in the Scottish Premiership play-off triumph.

Since moving to Scotland in January, Jacob Devaney has been a rare loan success story for Manchester United. The 18-year-old has taken to senior football with ease, looking completely at home in a physical and tough division.

Devaney hasn’t been shy about his ambitions, looking to play for United as soon as he can, and his loan spell has proven that he is absolutely capable.

United in Focus revealed that Devaney has caught the eye during his loan, and now he’s excelled in a high-pressure fixture to end his campaign.

Jacob Devaney shines for St Mirren in relegation play-off

Devaney’s season came to an end on Monday night, as he and St Mirren took on Partick Thistle with the winner earning a place in the Scottish Premiership for the 2026/27 campaign.

St Mirren were looking to retain their top division place, while Thistle were looking for promotion, and it was Devaney’s side which came out on top.

Devaney played the entire game in defensive midfield, looking strong, assured, and dominant throughout.

It says a lot about Devaney that he was able to effortlessly raise his levels to play professional football straight from the academy, and much is due to his mentality and physical traits.

Against Thistle, Devaney showed these qualities in midfield as he defended really well, covered so much ground, and looked like a seasoned professional with his dynamism and athleticism in midfield, a massive standout quality.

To play in such a high-pressure situation, with a club’s future on his shoulders, is the kind of game and experience that will make Devaney a star.

It was also telling that after the win, St Mirren Captain, Mark O’Hara, ran straight to Devaney to celebrate, which highlights what his teammates think of him.

It is unlikely Devaney spends 2026/27 in Scotland, as he has earned either a loan move closer to home, high in the Championship, or potentially even an even bigger prize.

Predict who will be the next Manchester United academy graduate…

Will Michael Carrick crown number 259 before this season ends?🤔

Devaney could be ready to seize his Manchester United chance

This summer, pre-season might be the golden chance for Devaney to prove he is good enough right now for a role under Michael Carrick.

Devaney has performed at Celtic Park, in front of a Premier League-sized crowd, and so we know that the occasion wouldn’t get to him.

His mental quality, combined with his technical and physical traits, all indicate a huge future. But while he develops, he might now be ready to play a part for United as part of a new look midfield department.

He will be returning confident and assured in his ability, so hopefully the club are ready and willing to see what he has during pre-season. Devaney backing up the two or three new signings this summer to help with rotation and game congestion would be perfect.
