United’s three worst players from 6-1 Spurs loss are still struggling

Plenty has happened since then but the last time Manchester United hosted Tottenham, they lost 6-1 back in October 2020.

On that day, we picked out Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Paul Pogba as United’s three worst players on that day.

As United prepare to welcome Spurs to Old Trafford once again, all three still face question marks over their performances.

Harry Maguire

United played Tottenham on October 4 2020, not long after Maguire’s ordeal in Greece during the off-season.

This Spurs game came as he was reeling from that and then he went on international duty with England and got sent off against Denmark.

It really looked at that stage like Maguire needed a break but he got his season back on track and went on to reach the final of Euro 2020 in the summer.

But this season, we are back to where we were at the time of the 6-1, with Maguire looking unsure of himself, ponderous and low on confidence.

Maguire needs a big performance against a side who tormented him last time they came to Old Trafford.

Paul Pogba

We wrote that his performance in the 6-1 was one of his worst for the club.

Pogba is not playing that badly right now but he was one of the first United players substituted in the Manchester derby and did not get to the pace of the game.

In October 2020, Pogba made a blatant play for Real Madrid to swoop and there are still huge question marks over his future now, with his contract expiring in the summer.

So in many ways, United are also at the same stage with Pogba now and he really needs to step up.

Luke Shaw

Maguire and Shaw were crashing into each other in this Spurs game, but by July the following year, they were national heroes.

But Shaw’s post-Euros hangover has been just as bad as Maguire’s, without perhaps the same scrutiny because he isn’t the captain.

The Englishman will miss this game as he is still suffering with Covid, meaning that Alex Telles should continue at left-back.

Telles was signed on transfer deadline day directly after the Spurs game and is currently enjoying his best spell of chances to impress at United.

Perhaps Shaw would be reinvigorated if his former Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino arrived at Old Trafford, but at the moment, he is a long way off the required level.
