Ruben Amorim’s arrival at Manchester United has fueled rumours of Viktor Gyokeres following him to Old Trafford.

Viktor Gyokeres was the centre-piece of Ruben Amorim‘s brilliant Sporting Lisbon side.

Since his move to Portugal in 2023, Gyokeres has scored 66 goals in 68 games under Amorim, including 18 in 23 this season.

Manchester United fans were blown away by Gyokeres after watching him net a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League in what turned out to be Amorim’s final home game with Sporting.

Gyokeres has been heavily linked with a move to United since Amorim’s appointment was completed but the new United coach insists he will not sign any Sporting players in January.

However, Sporting’s president said Gyokeres will not leave in January which lines up perfectly for a potential move for the Swedish star next summer.

Sporting Lisbon already have perfect Viktor Gyokeres replacement

Amorim pulled off a Sir Alex Ferguson-esque comeback in his final Sporting match after coming from two goals down to beat Braga 4-2.

Sporting scored in the 89th and 94th minute to complete their comeback, but it wasn’t Gyokeres who fired in the final two goals of Amorim’s tenure – it was 19-year-old striker Conrad Harder.

Harder also boasts an incredible goal record under Amorim after scoring seven goals in just 969 minutes of action this season.

He has understandably had to play second fiddle to Gyokeres up front as he continues to develop, but he could be unleashed as a starter if Gyokeres makes the move to Old Trafford.

As pointed out by Portuguese outlet A Bola, Harder scores every 62 minutes on average in Liga Portugal – only just shy of Gyokeres’ remarkable record of a goal every 60 minutes.

They argue that Harder is not Gyokeres yet, but “he is on his way there”. With Gyokeres available in the summer for £63m, it gives Harder a few more months to mature into a striker capable of starting every week for Sporting.

Hopefully it means Sporting are happy to lose Gyokeres to United next summer knowing they have another Scandinavian star ready to step up.

Ruben Amorim will want to make Rasmus Hojlund his Viktor Gyokeres

There are plenty of similarities between Gyokeres and Rasmus Hojlund. Both are tall, fast, strong and have an eye for goal.

However, at 21 years old Hojlund is still a raw talent with lots of space to grow and improve – that is where Amorim comes in.

United’s new head coach made Gyokeres a monster in front of goal, hopefully he can have a similar impact on Hojlund in Manchester.

Hojlund is not ready to be Amorim’s star man but he could thrive under the 3-4-3 system that Amorim is expected to implement at United.
