Manchester United have had a lot of false dawns in recent years, and fans know by now not to get too sucked in by hope.
Yet hope is exactly what Manchester United need right now, after a wretched start to the season that has left the team 13th in the Premier League.
Sacking Erik ten Hag became necessary, and Ruben Amorim will breathe new life into the club and squad, at a time it was desperately needed.
Sporting have retained Amorim’s services until November 10, meaning he took charge of their Champions League clash against City in midweek.
It felt like a needless extension and some connected with Sporting were not happy about it – but Amorim made it work.
Sporting defeated Pep Guardiola’s side 4-1, with in-form striker Viktor Gyokeres smashing in a hat-trick.

Amorim on Viktor Gyokeres
Viktor Gyokeres scored his 23rd goal of the season when he netted his third goal. His numbers are staggering, with 66 goals in 67 games for Sporting.
Manchester United fans were impressed, yet had to bear in mind Amorim’s comments last week that he will not sign any Sporting players in the January transfer window.
This did not stop the question being asked again, after Gyokeres hat-trick. Could Amorim have second thoughts?
The incoming Manchester United head coach refuted suggestions he will sign Gyokeres immediately.
He was quoted via Mais Futebol: “I’ve just made peace with them [Sporting], I’m not even going to joke about it.
“Viktor is a Sporting player, Sporting is a great club, they did a lot for him and he has to stay and finish the season.”
Amorim revels in successful night
Sporting’s players carried Amorim aloft at the final whistle as they celebrated winning his final home game. He will lead them away at Braga on Sunday.
“Players, atmosphere, I couldn’t have asked for a better night,” Amorim added.
He also urged Manchester United fans not to draw too many conclusions from his win over City, having warned about over-reacting either way, ahead of the game.
Amorim said: “It’s a bit misleading. I have the same defects and virtues that I had before the game. They are completely different worlds.
“Against these better teams, we can defend with a lower block. It’s completely different there, so you can’t take anything tactically.
“It’s better to win than to lose,” he added.
