Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ‘sign the next Mbappe’ comments come full circle with deal for potential Casemiro replacement

Manchester United are planning for the future and delivering a transfer policy Sir Jim Ratcliffe can get on board with.

Even before Ineos completed the purchase of their minority stake in Manchester United, Sir Jim Ratcliffe had reportedly expressed his disgust with the expensive deal committed for Casemiro.

Manchester United paid £60 million for the midfielder and made him the club’s highest paid player in excess of £300,000 per week, to lure him away from Real Madrid.

Ratcliffe’s concerns over Casemiro have been well-founded. He has been unsellable due to his wages, so has retained a first team role.

Casemiro is now into the final year of his contract, with the 33-year-old expected to be released.

Manchester United’s midfield requires renovation, and Casemiro’s impending exit may have already spurred the club into action.

Manchester United set to sign Cristian Orozco

Manchester United have struck an exciting deal to sign Colombian wonderkid Cristian Orozco.

Orozco is a holding midfielder who captained his country at the under-17 South American championships.

The teenager’s ‘fierce’ characteristics make him an exciting talent for the future, with United hoping they have signed a future star.

Orozco may end up becoming Casemiro’s long-term successor, although United are expected to sign a more first-team ready star next summer too.

United fans are excited about the move, with the club learning from past mistakes, failing to sign Moises Caicedo for £5 million, later seeing him become a £110 million player.

And with Casemiro potentially being replaced, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s concerns over that deal, his past comments over finding future stars have now come full circle.

Ratcliffe targeting ‘the next Mbappe’

Former Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward tried to restore the club’s past success by signing superstars. His strategy failed, despite his persistence.

Ratcliffe has stated that he wants Manchester United to buy the next future star, rather than blow world record fees on players, citing Kylian Mbappe as his main example.

He was quoted via ESPN in 2024: “I think in a way what I would rather do is try to sign the next Mbappe than spend a fortune trying to buy success.

“It’s not that clever buying Mbappe, anyone can figure that one out. What’s much more challenging is to find the next Mbappe or Bellingham or Roy Keane.”

Manchester United’s move for Orozco shows how the club are attempting to put that transfer strategy into action.

There is no guarantee of success, but these are the low cost swings you have to take, along with another deal for Sekou Kone the previous year.

In a world where the absolute top-tier players like Mbappe are out of United’s reach anyway, this is a far smarter move than overpaying for the next best thing.
