Ruben Amorim’s tactical system is showing the results it can yield after one first-team Manchester United player impressed against Manchester City at Old Trafford.
Manchester United hosted Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon for the final Manchester derby of the 2024-25 Premier League campaign.
Ruben Amorim had already beaten City boss Pep Guardiola twice this season, once during his time as Sporting CP manager and subsequently as United manager.
The 40-year-old Red Devils head coach was unable to walk away with the bragging rights again after United and City played out a 0-0 draw in the Premier League.
United had their clear-cut chances to break the deadlock — and find the winner — against Pep Guardiola’s men at Old Trafford in the derby on the weekend.
However, the Red Devils lacked the clinical finishing that has alluded them for the majority of the 2024-25 season under Amorim and former United boss Erik ten Hag.
United languish in 13th place and the Red Devils are still on course for their worst finish in the Premier League table since the league’s inception in 1992.
The Red Devils have only seven Premier League matches remaining and United have won only 10 matches of their 31 league fixtures so far in the 2024-25 campaign.

Man Utd ace Leny Yoro steps up big time for Ruben Amorim in Manchester derby clash vs Manchester City at Old Trafford
Leny Yoro started as the left-sided centre-back in Ruben Amorim’s tactical system for Manchester United in Sunday’s 0-0 draw against Manchester City.
The 19-year-old United defender played the full 90 minutes against Pep Guardiola’s side and Leny Yoro showed his real quality on the ball and off it for the Red Devils.
Yoro arrived at Old Trafford last summer under former United manager Erik ten Hag after the Red Devils snapped up the French centre-back from Ligue 1 outfit Lille.
The United star missed the opening months of the campaign due to a pre-season injury in 2024, but Yoro has bounced back and delivered with his performances.
Statman Dave on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, highlighted the ex-Lille man’s superb display against City with his individual stats in the match.
Yoro superbly progressed the ball in the Manchester derby and the United centre-back had 21 out of 25 forward passes and an 89 per cent pass accuracy.
Another impressive stat that Yoro now has to his name is that the United player has now played 12 matches in a row for the Red Devils without being dribbled past.
Ruben Amorim reveals what he saw from Man Utd’s performance vs Man City in the 0-0 Premier League draw at Old Trafford
Speaking after the United result at Old Trafford, Amorim was impressed with how the likes of Leny Yoro and Co are now improving their defending in matches.
“I think we did well,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.
“We play a different game compared to Nottingham [Forest] last week. I know the excitement of the game is not the same when you are not fighting for different things.
“Changes a little bit the environment of the derby. But I think we are improving how we defend: we are more compact, we gave them less space than [in] the last games.
“So, we are improving. We create some chances and then I think we have, always the same problem, is the lack of goals.”
United and Lyon will now play at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Thursday in their first-leg Europa League quarter-final clash, with kick-off slated for 8pm UK time.
