Ruben Amorim’s official job role at AC Milan risks repeat of Man United meltdown

The reason for Ruben Amorim’s sacking at Manchester United was his fallout with the club hierarchy.

Following a draw with Leeds United back in January, Ruben Amorim erupted in his post-match press conference and aimed his criticism at the club’s decision-makers.

Ruben Amorim made it clear he was the “manager” of Manchester United, not a head coach. He namedropped the likes of Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel and said while he does not have their managerial reputation, he wanted the same level of control behind the scenes.

There were reports of Jason Wilcox interfering with tactics before Amorim’s outburst, and it ultimately led to him being sacked.

Now, Amorim has been hired by AC Milan, but the terms of his contract are similar to the ones he signed at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim is AC Milan’s head coach, not manager

United hired Amorim as a head coach, and that was made clear in his official unveiling at Old Trafford.

It was symbolic of a change of structure at Old Trafford, straying from the power that was once given to Sir Alex Ferguson and indicating that the head coach will now work under an organised sporting structure.

AC Milan confirmed Amorim’s appointment on Tuesday afternoon, but once again he was welcomed as a “head coach”.

Considering Amorim lashed out at his role at United and not being given enough sporting control, he has once again signed terms that mean he will have to work under a sporting director at the San Siro.

What powers does Ruben Amorim have as a head coach?

Amorim clearly felt his toes were being trodden on at United by the Ineos hierarchy, notably sporting director Jason Wilcox.

According to reports, Amorim did have a say on transfers at Old Trafford and he could veto certain targets and suggest others, but ultimately the recruitment was spearheaded by Wilcox and Christopher Vivell.

Vivell has been linked to AC Milan and their new sporting structure, and ironically it means he could work with Amorim just months after the fallout at Old Trafford.

Once again, Amorim will not have complete power over transfers at Milan. He will, though, likely demand full control of the team’s tactical setup.
