Manchester United were unable to avenge last season’s Europa League final heartbreak against Tottenham Hotspur.
Ruben Amorim came within 90 minutes of winning a trophy in his first season as Manchester United head coach, but a 1-0 defeat in the Europa League final only added to his misery.
Ahead of this weekend, Amorim noticed improvements since the final, but United could only draw 2-2 with Tottenham with a dramatic finish in North London.

Once again, Amorim watched United throw away a lead, but the Red Devils head coach will be more frustrated with the energy levels from his players.

Man United were outrun by Tottenham again
When he was first appointed, Amorim urged United to ‘run like mad dogs’ if they wanted to return to the top of English football.
It was a non-negotiable that United should work harder and run more than their opponents. With only one match per week this season, that is more important than ever.
Tottenham outran United in the final last season, and this weekend, Thomas Frank’s side also covered more distance. According to BBC Sport, Spurs covered 108.95km compared to United’s 108.52.
The gap certainly isn’t staggering, but considering Tottenham had played in the Champions League just a few days prior, it will be a frustrating stat for Amorim to wrap his head around.
Throughout the recent unbeaten run, United tend to win when they outrun opponents, but the energy levels dipped in North London.
Man United schedule about to ramp up
The silver lining of losing the Europa League is that Amorim and his players can put their full focus on the Premier League.
Playing only one game a week has certainly benefited players such as Casemiro. The Brazilian midfielder has been revitalised this season, and United have collapsed without Casemiro on the pitch.
As a result of fewer games, injuries have not been a concern to date. However, Benjamin Sesko’s injury is now a concern, while Harry Maguire and Casemiro also suffered knocks against Spurs.

Injuries and fatigue will only ramp up in the coming months as the Premier League winter schedule comes into effect.
After the international break, United play eight games in 36 days, so energy levels and intensity will have to rise.
