Ruben Amorim has a few selection headaches to mull over ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Brentford.

Following a chaotic 2-1 win over Chelsea in the Premier League last time out, Ruben Amorim has a chance to make it back-to-back wins.

Amorim has overcome a tough start to the season, and next up for the Red Devils is a clash against 17th-placed Brentford.

United will head to the Gtech Community Stadium as favourites, but it has not been a happy hunting ground in recent years. Many fans will remember the disastrous 4-0 defeat to Brentford under Erik ten Hag.

Last season, United lost 4-3 to Brentford in the Premier League, but one player stood out and deserves to start again this time around.

Manuel Ugarte starred against Brentford last season

Last season’s trip to Brentford was one of the final league games in the 2024/25 season, and it arrived just before a crucial Europa League semi-final clash against Athletic Club.

Mason Mount, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo were on the scoresheet for United, but a leaky defence conceded four goals to Brentford.

There were several disappointing performances from what was a very youthful United side, but Manuel Ugarte was “at the top of his game” and was easily one of the best players on the pitch.

Manuel Ugarte played the full 90 minutes alongside Kobbie Mainoo in midfield, and even though United conceded four, without the Uruguayan midfielder it could have been much, much worse.

It has not been a brilliant start to the season for Ugarte, and fans have grown frustrated at seeing the 24-year-old be given game time ahead of Mainoo.

But there is no denying that Ugarte was brilliant against Chelsea after coming on at half-time to fill the void left by Casemiro.

Amorim set up his side to defend their lead and Ugarte’s work-rate in midfield was pivotal in picking up all three points.

With Casemiro suspended for the Brentford clash, Amorim has a big choice to make in midfield about who will partner captain Bruno Fernandes.

Given his impressive record against Brentford and a strong performance against Chelsea last time out, Ugarte could be at the top of Amorim’s list.
