Manchester United came out on top in an action-packed win over Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.
Two red cards, three goals and the stormy weather at Old Trafford brought plenty of drama as Manchester United beat Chelsea 2-1 in the Premier League.
Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro scored the goals for the Red Devils in the first half, before the Brazilian received a red card and followed Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez down the tunnel.
Ruben Amorim breathed a huge sigh of relief at the final whistle, and there is plenty to unpack from what was a chaotic win for United.
Luke Shaw’s battle with Enzo Fernandez
The rain was relentless at Old Trafford and it set the scene for a gritty and combative match between the two sides.
Amorim kept his faith in Luke Shaw as the left-sided centre-back, and the 30-year-old found himself tangled in several duels with Chelsea’s £106 million midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
United were heavily linked with Fernandez back in 2022, but since joining the Blues, he has often been the villain at Old Trafford, having previously clashed with Mason Mount.
This time, Shaw came out on top in what was a fierce battle between both players. Their duel continued even after the full-time whistle.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s gesture from the stands
Legendary United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was spotted in the stands at Old Trafford watching the match, and even at 83 years old, he couldn’t help but get involved in the action.
When Sanchez was sent off in the opening five minutes, cameras caught Ferguson gesturing for a red card from the stands.
Manuel Ugarte’s last-ditch block
When Casemiro was sent off in the first half, Amorim called on Manuel Ugarte at half-time to come on and fill the void left by the Brazilian in midfield.
Ugarte has suffered an underwhelming start to the campaign, but he played a key role in preserving the lead at Old Trafford.
As Chelsea chased an equaliser in the final few minutes, it was Ugarte who got himself in the way of Andrey Santos’ shot in the box.
It went under the radar in such a chaotic match, but it was an action that potentially earned United an extra two points.
Matheus Cunha’s passionate celebration
Amorim set out to defend United’s lead in the second half, and Matheus Cunha was brought off the bench to be an attacking outlet for the Red Devils.
Cunha missed the Manchester derby through injury, but he was superb on his return, especially in terms of managing the game.
The £62.5 million summer signing protected the ball brilliantly and often pushed United up the pitch to relieve the pressure on goal.
When the full-time whistle went, United fans joined Cunha in releasing a passionate roar. This felt like more than just three points, and Cunha’s celebrations reflect that.
Bruno Fernandes hit incredible milestone
There was so much action and drama in United’s win over Chelsea that Bruno Fernandes’ remarkable achievement got slightly overshadowed.
But the Portuguese playmaker deserves the spotlight for netting his 100th goal for United, putting his name alongside club legends.
