Nicky Butt has a plan for Marcus Rashford, but Man Utd should avoid it

The uncertainty surrounding Marcus Rashford’s future will drag on into the summer, with the England forward likely to return to Manchester United for pre-season.

Reports this week suggest Marcus Rashford could have a route back to Manchester United.

After a season-long loan at Barcelona, the La Liga champions passed on the opportunity to sign Rashford for £26m by not securing a deal ahead of the buy option’s deadline on June 15.

The 28-year-old is currently competing at the 2026 World Cup and will hope for a starting berth when England takes on DR Congo in the Round of 32.

Nicky Butt claims Marcus Rashford is the perfect fit for Arsenal

Many former United players appear on weekly podcasts.

Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand are trying to build media empires, while the likes of Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt enjoy looking like they don’t enjoy the attention that comes with running their mouths on podcasts.

The longer there’s uncertainty with Rashford’s future, they’re all going to continue expressing their opinions on what he or United should do next.

As pointed out in a previous column, United are in limbo with Rashford. He’s under contract, and Michael Carrick may feel he can get the best out of him.

However, Butt sees no way back for Rashford and believes the United academy graduate would be a perfect fit for Arsenal.

“I think it’d be a perfect fit for Marcus, Arsenal,” Butt told The Good, The Bad & The Football.

“I’d liken it to Welbeck when he went to Arsenal. I think it’s a big club that they’re used to playing for and I think Marcus still has a lot (to offer), what is he, 28, 29?

“I think the only way he can stay at Man Utd is if they can’t get a buyer for him.”

Butt added: “But for me, if I was Arsenal I’d be signing him all day long.

“I think Trossard is a really good squad player. I think Martinelli replace him with Rashford all day long. I think what you’re going to get what a club would get for him get him for 30 million pound in modern day football for Rashford is nothing.”

The problem here is that United know Rashford is still a very good player. That means selling him to Arsenal would strengthen a direct rival.

Hence why Ineos need to weigh up the pros and cons. Rashford is earning a savage wage at the club, one they would rather cut entirely, but the lack of potential suitors will make things difficult.

The same applies if Chelsea were to show an interest in Rashford. He’s a much better player than Alejandro Garnacho, so it’s not quite the same scenario.

Man Utd must make it clear they value Marcus Rashford

When Ruben Amorim issued a firing squad and isolated players like Rashford and Garnacho from the squad last summer, it significantly weakened United’s negotiation position.

United must appear as though they want to keep Rashford or value him as a player.

Otherwise, other clubs will walk away or try to get him on the cheap.

It will be interesting to hear what Carrick has to say about it when he speaks to the media for the first time during pre-season.
