Michael Carrick’s rating of Cunha, Sesko and Mbeumo shows what core of Ineos’ Man Utd transfer policy must remain

Michael Carrick has been the biggest benefactor at Manchester United of inheriting Ruben Amorim’s last summer signings of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko under Ineos.

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United spell ended in January and the verdict was still out over whether or not last summer’s transfer window was incredibly effective.

Senne Lammens has been consistent and reliable since his arrival, but the feelings were mixed on attackers Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.

Cunha, Mbeumo and Sesko have all seen highs and lows at Old Trafford this season, but the trio are becoming a core part of the attacking identity under Michael Carrick.

Michael Carrick thinks Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko all share something in common at Man Utd

Ineos splashed out big last summer to reinforce Ruben Amorim’s options and the pressure was immediately on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.

Michael Carrick’s tactical approach at Manchester United has effectively tapped into the range of different abilities in Amorim’s trio of summer signings from 2025.

Cunha has been a key attacking option out on the left and the 26-year-old Brazil international has seen an improvement in his defensive contributions as well.

Mbeumo and Sesko have been interchangeable in the frontline for Carrick and the two United summer signings have yielded mixed results over the last 12 matches.

“Between them, all of our front players can give us something different,” Carrick told TNT Sports ahead of Man Utd’s 1-0 win over Chelsea.

“I think that Bryan and Matheus have performed really well this season and Ben has also shown he is finding his way and still managed to score important goals.”

Irrespective of their highs and lows in their debut season, Carrick singled out how the new signings have shown their “attributes, personalities and the flexibility.”

“Sometimes it can take a while to get used to things after arriving at the club, but those boys have shown their attributes, personalities and the flexibility where they can play in different roles and it’s good for the team to have players who can help us in that aspect,” he added.

Michael Carrick’s verdict on Man Utd’s trio of signings from last summer shows Ineos have an effective transfer formula in place

Cunha, Mbeumo and Sesko would defy all expectations if either one of them (or all of them) went from strength to strength each week across the entire season.

It is expected that the aforementioned Man Utd trio will need time to settle in at Old Trafford and for the expectations to rise in future seasons going forward.

However, Carrick has reinforced that Ineos’ summer transfer window in 2025 hit the right areas for signing attackers who can play in “different roles” for the team.

United legend Carrick has been far more pragmatic than Amorim with his tactical flexibility and it has only been to his benefit when he has had to shake up his side.

United fans can feel critical about Ineos’ handling of the whole Amorim reign, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s regime hit the nail on the head in the transfer market last summer.
