Matheus Cunha has developed a Fernandes-like trait that makes him undroppable for Man Utd now

Matheus Cunha scored again for Manchester United against Liverpool for his ninth of the season, and yet another in a big game.

With Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Liverpool, a return to the Champions League for the 2026/27 season is confirmed, with three games to spare.

It was a day to remember for Michael Carrick, with United having multiple standout performers in a win that was far from straightforward despite an easy opening 45 minutes.

Among the stars of the show was Matheus Cunha, as the Brazilian scored the opener, which sees him continue a Bruno Fernandes-esque record that proves he cannot be dropped.

Matheus Cunha’s goal against Liverpool completes brilliant record for Manchester United

When Carrick first arrived, Cunha was his 12th man, coming off the bench in the opening two games to an impactful end.

He soon nailed down a starting spot with Patrick Dorgu’s injury, and now that the Dane is back, Cunha won’t be dropped anytime soon thanks to his Fernandes-like trait of stepping up in the biggest games.

This season, Cunha has scored or assisted against each of the other ‘Big Six’ sides this season, excluding Spurs, who can’t be considered in this anymore.

Being able to step up in the big games, with his goal contribution record, makes Cunha impossible not to start in these big games.

This is similar to Fernandes, with an inevitability to his game, particularly when the lights are brightest, which is good news for next season in the Champions League.

Cunha’s form under Michael Carrick has been phenomenal

Cunha took time to settle in at Manchester United as he the goals didn’t come for him earlier this season, despite his all-around performances being impressive.

But since the end of October, Cunha has been one of United’s main men and most consistent with nine goals and two assists this season.

Particularly in his last five games, Cunha has scored three goals, and in each game he’s been among the top performers.

Carrick is getting the best of Cunha, but his ultimate level is yet to come.

Next season, we fully expect Cunha to break the 30-goal contribution barrier in all competitions. He’s undoubtedly a successful signing.
