Man Utd handed double boost with Bryan Mbeumo after Cameroon suffer World Cup nightmare

The pain of missing out on a World Cup spot for Bryan Mbeumo is Manchester United’s gain. Following Cameroon’s shock exit from the qualifying phase this week, the forward’s personal blow delivers two key pieces of good news that will greatly benefit Ruben Amorim.

Manchester United are still waiting to find out which players will be going to the World Cup next summer.

Eight United players missed out on call-ups for the November international break, including Benjamin Sesko after sustaining a knee injury in United’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham.

However, Bryan Mbeumo was one of 20 United players who were called up, but his spell on international duty has ended in disappointment because Cameroon won’t be competing at the World Cup.

Cameroon took on DR Congo in the semi-finals of their World Cup qualifying campaign, with United loanee Andre Onana starting between the sticks and Mbeumo playing the entire game.

DR Congo won 1-0, but the result should give United at least two reasons to be happy, even if it’s at Mbeumo’s expense on an international level.

Opinion: Cameroon blow hands Man Utd double boost

If Cameroon got their desired result over DR Congo, Mbeumo would have been involved in a play-off final against Nigeria.

That means Mbeumo can return to Carrington immediately and begin preparations to face Everton at Old Trafford next week.

Ruben Amorim wants to continue his unbeaten run of five matches in the Premier League by getting back to winning ways, after drawing the last two matches 2-2.

It helps that Mbeumo, who has been United’s best player this season with six goals to his name, will be fully prepared for the next game rather than returning at a later date from international duty.

Moreover, Cameroon’s elimination means that Mbeumo will not be going to the World Cup next summer.

The 26-year-old should get a full pre-season under his belt with United next year, which should stand him in good stead to hit the ground running again next term.

It may seem selfish, but the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson was always mindful of losing players to internationals because they contribute to players burning out and injuries.

When will Bryan Mbeumo play for Cameroon next?

Cameroon will take part in the Africa Cup of Nations, which begins at the end of December and carries on into January.

That means United will be missing not only Mbeumo, but Amad and Noussair Mazraoui as well due to AFCON commitments.

Cameroon play Gabon in their first game of the group stages before facing the Ivory Coast and Mozambique.

United fans will hope they won’t be without these key players for too long.
