Man Utd fans’ biggest pet peeve about Gary Neville is finally addressed and answer isn’t ‘black and white’

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has finally laid out his case to Manchester United fans about one of their biggest frustrations with him in his post-playing career.

The 51-year-old former Manchester United captain is widely admired for his prolific playing career at Old Trafford after his emergence from the youth academy.

However, the same can’t be said about Gary Neville’s managerial career after his disastrous spell at La Liga side Valencia, which lasted only four months.

Neville has found much more success with punditry than managing teams, despite irking United fans on multiple occasions during his broadcasting on Sky Sports.

Man Utd legend Gary Neville sets the record straight with the comments made around his broadcasting ‘tone’ for the Red Devils

Manchester United supporters have been vocal about Gary Neville’s stance regarding the Red Devils, specifically the way in which he speaks about them on punditry.

Neville is a key figure for Sky Sports during Premier League seasons and Man Utd’s ‘Class of ‘92’ star is often criticised for his ‘tone’ of voice around his side.

The United legend linked up with former Red Devils and England teammate Rio Ferdinand and was asked about his broadcasting tendencies around the club.

Neville was the first to admit that it is incredibly difficult for him to strike a ‘balance’ with views and feelings around Man Utd matches during his punditry role for Sky.

“But if you go and watch the commentary of the [Manchester] City and Arsenal games in Michael [Carrick]’s first two matches, I was like, ‘That’s an unbelievable performance,’” he said on Rio Ferdinand Presents.

“I mean, so I don’t know, like I say, United is definitely the hardest game for me to get the balance right.

“Because there’s a lot of criticism coming my way if I overegg the enthusiasm, and there’s a lot of criticism [coming] my way from United fans if I sort of get it a little bit like, if they feel I’m not sort of getting that sort of sentiment right.

“But if you said to me, ‘Don’t cover United games for Sky, let me just sit in the stand and watch them.’ I’d say, ‘Yeah, all day long.’ But I still do the games.”

Gary Neville’s point about ‘balance’ with his punditry shows the major difficulties that Man Utd fans overlook

This is not an outright defence of Neville by any stretch of the imagination, but the former England and Man Utd player has hit the nail on the head with his points.

Neville cannot be a Man Utd fan during what is meant to be ‘objective punditry’ and there is a real challenge to manage the inherent bias that he will have for the Red Devils.

The Sky Sports pundit has an incredible affinity with the Premier League club after capturing eight Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues with United.

It is far from easy for Neville to mirror the energy of United fans in his punditry without getting the finger pointed at him from rival supporters — and vice versa.

Jamie Carragher, much like Neville, receives similar types of criticism for potentially showing ‘bias punditry’ towards Liverpool after his playing career at Anfield.

Neville has addressed a contentious problem for Red Devils fans, but supporters have seen how difficult it is for him to strike an all-important balance with punditry.
