Bruno Fernandes’ hamstring injury has left Ruben Amorim with a major midfield dilemma at Manchester United.
For the first time in his Manchester United career, Bruno Fernandes is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury in the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.
Ruben Amorim’s update on Fernandes suggests the 31-year-old playmaker could miss several upcoming matches for the Red Devils.
Ruben Amorim is refusing to give up on a quick return for Bruno Fernandes
When do you think Bruno Fernandes will return?
With Kobbie Mainoo injured as well, United’s midfield strength has been depleted in the space of a few days.
Amorim refused to rule out January signings in his post-match comments, and Ineos are already aware of one midfield target who would soften the blow of Fernandes’ injury.

Ruben Neves could replace Bruno Fernandes short term
Last month, United in Focus revealed United’s interest in Ruben Neves, who has been a long-term target for the Red Devils.
Since then, it has been reported that Neves is available for £18m. His Al-Hilal contract is set to expire in the summer, and he is open to a return to the Premier League.
While Neves works brilliantly with Fernandes from their time together in the Portugal squad, the 28-year-old now represents a bargain opportunity to actually fill his void in midfield.
Ruben Neves has emerged as a possible midfield signing for Man Utd in January
Still only 28, Portugal international, do you think United should sign Neves? 💷
Fernandes could miss more than half of January while recovering from injury, and so an early deal for Neves would give Amorim some much-needed midfield depth during this hectic period of the season.
Neves’ wages could be a stumbling block with reports that he is currently earning £350,000 per week in Saudi Arabia. But if a reasonable pay package can be agreed, it is a signing that makes sense on every level.
How Ruben Neves could line up for Man United
Amorim has showcased his tactical flexibility in the past few weeks at United, interchanging between his beloved 3-4-2-1 system and a four-man defence.
Against Villa, Mason Mount dropped into a three-man midfield, and Neves would be a brilliant signing as another option in Amorim’s midfield.
Even in a double pivot, Neves could play alongside Casemiro and take up the role usually played by Fernandes. His ball progression is brilliant, while also being defensively adept.
Neves could even unlock Matheus Cunha having previously captained the Brazilian during their time together at Wolves.
Amorim doesn’t want short-term signings at United, and rightly so. But at 28-years-old, Neves is in his prime and would strengthen United’s squad considerably.
