Manchester United fans got a glimpse into the future against Wrexham with many youngsters, but two alongside JJ Gabriel weren’t in action.
In the absence of World Cup-bound players, Michael Carrick fielded an entire academy XI for the second half of the 0-1 loss against Wrexham.
The players didn’t let him down either, as the likes of Harry Amass, Jacob Devaney, and Dan Gore played out of their skin, among others.
However, the crown jewel of the academy, JJ Gabriel, was missing, while the two most exciting wonderkids didn’t get any minutes.

Name your biggest positive and biggest negative from Man Utd’s game vs Wrexham…
The stats showed how well Man Utd played vs Wrexham…
Why JJ Gabriel did not play for Man Utd vs Wrexham
Gabriel tore apart the youth circuit last season despite playing against players almost three years his senior at the 18s level.
It led to him winning the club’s U18s Player of the Year award, but a senior debut was never going to happen.
United’s elimination from cup competitions meant that Gabriel was ineligible to play for the senior team, which is no longer the case this season.
However, it emerged before the Wrexham game that Gabriel had only just returned to training, and this game came too soon for him.
Therefore, he missed the Wrexham game, but it would be a surprise not to see him get some minutes in the next game against Rosenborg.
While Gabriel’s absence was forced, Carrick didn’t field two of the most exciting wonderkids at the club against Wrexham as a pure choice.
Jim Thwaites and Chido Obi were odd ones out vs Wrexham
22 players played 45 minutes each against Wrexham, and the traveling squad consisted of 25, so two players were always going to become the odd one out, along with third-choice GK, Dermot Mee.
Where will Jim Thwaites be in 12 months?
He's got all the tools to excel in the Manchester United first-team…
As it turns out, those unfortunate two players are also United’s most exciting prospects, and Chido Obi and Jim Thwaites stayed on the bench.
Carrick preferred the experience of Toby Collyer and Dan Gore ahead of Thwaites, while Ethan Wheatley was played ahead of Obi.
Much has been written about Thwaites banging on the door of the first-team, while Obi has shown immense improvement in his game since last season.
Therefore, it was a surprise to see the two of them stayed rooted to the bench, especially ahead of players like Collyer, whose future seems away from Old Trafford.
Hopefully, the pair get their chance against Rosenborg as Carrick shuffles his pack once again to spread minutes and fitness across his whole group.
