JJ Gabriel is eligible to star in 2026/27
JJ Gabriel has made incredible progress in Manchester United’s academy while playing up against older players.
There is a very real chance that he becomes Manchester United’s youngest ever player, breaking the record set by David Gaskell in 1950.
Gabriel turns 16 on October 10, and he is eligible to make his first team debut at any time.
Premier League rules meant that even if United wanted to, Gabriel was not permitted to play for the club in 2025/26.
This was because he had not turned 15 by the start of the campaign (August 2025), a restriction that Gabriel now meets heading into the 2026/27 season.
Pre-season 2026 is the opportunity for Gabriel to demonstrate that he can contribute at first team level, by impressing in training and in friendly matches.
Gabriel has trained regularly with the first team over the course of the season. This time there is a pathway forward.
Could 2026 be too early for Gabriel? Possibly.
But we will get a closer look at how he adapts at a higher level over the next few weeks.

JJ Gabriel was named as Manchester United’s Jimmy Murphy Player of the Year for 2026/27.

The attacking midfielder scored 26 goals in all competitions for United’s academy last season, while becoming the club’s youngest ever FA Youth Cup scorer.
