Jim Thwaites has emerged as one of Manchester United’s most exciting academy talents and a pathway to the first team has already been laid by Kobbie Mainoo.

Interim head coach Michael Carrick watched Jim Thwaites in action this week as Manchester United’s U18s beat Oxford United 4-1 in the FA Youth Cup.

Thwaites has been compared to David Beckham because of his set-piece technique and passing ability in midfield, and the 18-year-old has been singled out as one of the academy stars closest to a senior breakthrough.

United last won the FA Youth Cup in 2022 when Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho were key players in the trophy run.

Just a few months later, Mainoo made his senior debut against Charlton under Erik ten Hag. The Carrington graduate quickly went on to become a first-team regular, and now he is thriving under Michael Carrick.

That is the exact pathway that Thwaites will want to walk at United, and he is currently on track.

Winning the FA Youth Cup will shine a spotlight on what is a very talented Under-18s side at United, and Thwaites is the captain of that team.

Considering that United need midfield reinforcements in 2026, it is a golden opportunity for Thwaites to catch the attention of staff and coaches so he is ready to challenge for a first-team spot in the summer.

Pre-season training is crucial for Jim Thwaites

Mainoo was the star of United’s pre-season in 2022 before eventually making his breakthrough in the first team.

It was his first opportunity to impress Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff in person, and he took it with both hands.

In the summer, United will hire a permanent head coach, and Thwaites will hope to be involved in the pre-season squad so he can prove himself against the first-team players.

United must be careful not to block Thwaites’ progress by signing too many midfielders, but it’s up to the teenage midfielder to put himself in the thinking of United’s transfer team.
