Jim Thwaites is making a name for himself in Manchester United’s academy and Ineos must consider the 18-year-old in their transfer planning.
Manchester United have several exciting academy players rising through their ranks, but the name on everyone’s lips this week is Jim Thwaites.
Thwaites scored a stunning free-kick for United’s Under-18s in a 3-1 win over arch-rivals Manchester City.
Which player does Jim Thwaites remind you of?
Do you think he will make it in the first team at Man Utd?
Interim head coach Michael Carrick is impressed by Thwaites, and the 18-year-old is considered one of the young players closest to making his first-team breakthrough.
It is known that United want to strengthen their midfield department in 2026, but Thwaites’ rise at Carrington should definitely be in Ineos’ mind when planning transfers.

Jim Thwaites’ Man United breakthrough must not be blocked
Based on his recent academy performances, Thwaites is ready for first-team football and he could end up saving United millions in the transfer market.
While Ineos want to spend on a high-profile midfield signing in the summer, it must be in their thinking that Thwaites’ pathway should not be blocked.
Academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo has already had his minutes limited due to a lack of trust from former head coach Ruben Amorim. Thwaites deserves the trust and faith of United staff that he will be given an opportunity.
Will Manchester United’s academy midfield group produce another world class talent?
Scholes, Mainoo, ???? Who is the next one up?
With Casemiro leaving in the summer, United definitely need to dip into the market for one top-class midfielder ready to improve the starting XI, but a second high-profile signing risks limiting opportunities for the likes of Thwaites.
Ultimately, pre-season training will be crucial for staff to assess whether or not Thwaites is ready to make the step up in the 2026/27 season or whether he will be held back for further development.
Man United cannot repeat Paul Pogba mistake with Jim Thwaites
In 2012, United lost one of their most exciting academy prospects when Paul Pogba left for Juventus as a free agent.
Pogba refused to sign a contract, and later stated that he felt a lack of “trust” from Sir Alex Ferguson and the club’s decision-makers.
“It made me a bit angry and was nothing about the money. It’s just about you’re a player, we believe in you, you believe in you and, me, I just want to play football. That is all I want,” Pogba said about his United exit, as quoted by Goal.
United would later break their transfer record to re-sign Pogba for £89 million under Jose Mourinho.
Thwaites is yet to prove himself in first-team football, but he is one of the club’s most exciting prospects. United need strength in midfield, and the club need to show trust in their youth players.
Repeating the Pogba situation would be a huge mistake.
