Ineos will be forced to abandon frugal midfield transfer policy, as Man Utd hit with Tonali update

Add as preferred source on Google

Sandro Tonali is a name on Manchester United’s summer wishlist, but Tottenham might have just made it impossible after also nabbing Mateus Fernandes.

Ineos might be getting a bit of a wake up call this week regarding the unwillingness to break the bank for a midfielder.

Manchester United missed out on Elliot Anderson due to his £130m transfer fee and £300,000-a-week wages, and also missed out on Mateus Fernandes also for financial reasons after Tottenham agreed a £85m transfer fee with wages of £250,000-a-week.

United are now considering alternatives such as Alex Scott and Sandro Tonali, but the Italian could soon be off the table as well in a move that furthers Ineos’ problems.

Tottenham’s €100m Sandro Tonali bid forces Manchester United to change strategy

United knew a deal for Tonali would be really expensive and potentially out of the club’s budget with Newcastle demanding £100m according to reports, which he isn’t worth.

But there was a hope Tonali might be available for cheaper later in the window if he begins to force a transfer, but now Tottenham have ruined this.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Tottenham have now made a bid worth €100m (£85m) for Tonali this summer.

Spurs are throwing everything at this summer transfer window, funded by debt, in a hope to escape the relegation battle purgatory they currently find themselves in.

By doing so, they are artificially inflating the midfield market by having to pay way over the odds to sign players, both in terms of wages and outright winning the bidding war to ensure selling clubs can only sell to them.

This has already cost United Fernandes, who was worth £65m opposed to £85m and could now impact the interest in Tonali.

But it gets worse.

£85-100m for Tonali and £85m for Fernandes sets the price for Carlos Baleba, Scott, Ayyoub Bouaddi and any other top midfield options United have this summer around that same fee.

This by default either means United need to abandon the hope of acting in a frugal manner and signing the tier one targets. Or alternatively, look to instead sign the Lamine Camara or Mamadou Sangare’s of the window.

It was admirable for United to be trying to avoid paying these ridiculous fees for players who aren’t worth it, but the market is only trending in one direction and that is upwards.

So United might simply have to pay up for the players they want in midfield this summer, albeit annoyingly a little late for Fernandes, but for Aurelien Tchouameni, Tonali or Scott, Ineos need to accept they will have to pay a premium.

Waiting will only see these deals get more expensive.

Ineos are trying to replicate 2025 transfer window, but it isn’t possible

United are trying to replicate the success of summer 2025, when players made it clear they would only join United before then negotiating a deal with clubs cheaper than what others might have paid.

According to BBC Sport, United are pointing to the success of this behind the scenes as they believe this strategy works.

They are right, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were big successes, but this summer is a completely different situation.

This summer, United are shopping in a market with more competition than just Newcastle and recklessly spending Spurs, making it difficult to see Ineos getting a similar summer to 2025.

Clubs are only going to continue upping demands with so many clubs seeking a new midfielder this summer.

United need to realise this before it is too late and back Carrick. The original midfield budget just isn’t realistic anymore.

Find a way to compete financially, sacrifice signing a winger or whatever it takes, Ineos just need to step up and spend what is required.

It is unfortunate and none of the midfielders this summer at the higher end of the market are worth that much, but it’s the price and if United won’t pay, then the club will fall behind.
