Scott McTominay has become a fixture in Manchester United’s midfield this season and rightly so.
The Scotland international has added energy, discipline and desire to an engine room which sorely needs it.
But he has also started finding the net with reasonable regularity for a player who has anchored his side’s midfield for much of the campaign.
Who’s he outscoring?
McTominay’s opportunist strike against Norwich on Sunday took his Premier League goals tally for the season to two.
That puts him ahead of Liverpool’s Gigi Wijnaldum, Arsenal record signing Nicolas Pepe, Gylfi Sigurdsson as well as Tottenham duo Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen.
The record is impressive for a player tasked with protecting his back four for much of the term, as well as covering Paul Pogba’s languid darts forward.
He has played further forward on occasion, when Nemanja Matic or James Garner have come into the side, showcasing powerful runs forward which United fans might wish to see more of.
How many can McTominay realistically get?
McTominay has drawn comparisons with Darren Fletcher, who was capable of playing in a host of midfield roles.
The most the Scot got in a season was five, in 2009/10, which perhaps provides a realistic benchmark for McTominay if he stays fit.
With Pogba now expected to be out until December, Fred’s presence at the heart of the United midfield may create greater balance.
That could mean McTominay gets more opportunities to bomb forward and add to his total.
For the time being, McTominay is setting the standard at United with his running, consistency, commitment and now his goal threat. There should be more to come, especially if he is liberated to attack further.
