Forget Barcola, PSG’s Yan Diomande-led double swoop opens brilliant market opportunity for Man Utd

Manchester United might get a break in the transfer window due to PSG’s double swoop, despite Bradley Barcola looking close to Liverpool.

The search for a midfielder at Man Utd has hit a snag with an uncomfortable bidding war for Mateus Fernandes.

However, the left wing is also an area that is being explored, with Marcus Rashford’s future in limbo.

PSG’s Bradley Barcola is an exciting target, but Liverpool look like the clear frontrunners. Fortunately, PSG’s double swoop opens up another market opportunity.

Man Utd should look at Ibrahim Mbaye swoop

Yan Diomande had emerged as one of Man Utd’s targets before this summer, but he has chosen to go to PSG instead.

That is not a blow in itself, since United looked like fringe onlookers at best for his signature, but it does open a market opportunity.

Earlier, it looked like a simple case of Diomande to PSG, opening up Barcola to Liverpool, but PSG aren’t stopping at Diomande.

The UCL champions are close to a deal for Monaco’s Maghnes Akhliouche, further increasing the competition on the left.

This puts PSG’s 18-year-old wonderkid Ibrahim Mbaye in an awkward position, as he would have been hoping to build on an encouraging 2025/26 season with more minutes.

It’s hard to see where those minutes come from now, but a switch to Old Trafford can open up options for him.

Mbaye can be a shrewd signing with a high ceiling

Unlike the midfield, United need more options on the left rather than stardust to raise the team’s floor.

How much do you think Man Utd will spend in this window?

It can be revealed that £243m will already be leaving Old Trafford this summer…

A signing like Mbaye will be a shrewd one, since he can slot into a rotational role right away behind Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu.

He can grow his game away from the spotlight with a role like he had at PSG last season, only against a better quality of opposition.

If he pans out, United will have a player with an extremely high ceiling, already adapted to English football, to eventually take over the starting spot.

If he doesn’t, then he still has PSG credit in the bank, and his age will ensure United can find buyers for him, because his wage demands won’t be very high.

It’s a relatively risk-free signing with a high upside if he’s pushed out of PSG due to their double swoop. The real gem available in Paris isn’t Barcola, it’s Mbaye.
