Manchester United miraculously have Champions League football wrapped up with three games to spare this season, meaning Michael Carrick can afford to start experimenting.
Michael Carrick has put Manchester United in the luxurious position of the final three matches of the season being effectively dead rubbers.
United’s return to the Champions League is long-overdue, but just participating isn’t enough, and while this season is almost in the books, it isn’t too early to start planning for 2026/27.
For this reason, Carrick shouldn’t stick with the status quo, because there are multiple questions he needs to start figuring out.

Noah Ajayi, Godwill Kukonki and Jim Thwaites debut
With Champions League football wrapped up, United finally have a chance to give the academy some recognition, and there are numerous worthy options.
Several United academy players deserve a debut, but for Carrick, it should be about seeing who can take a role needed next season and save some of the budget.
Noah Ajayi could give United the left-wing answer needed, with his direct running and ability to hug the touchline. With rumours of Matheus Cunha not being completely fit, the German should be seriously considered to make an impact and show he can be counted on.
Godwill Kukonki has enjoyed a wonderful season at left-back, and with that position set to be strengthened in the summer, United should give the 18-year-old a chance before this season ends, he might even be the answer.
Then, finally and most likely, Jim Thwaites should get the chance to prove he is ready to play a role in midfield ahead of this summer’s revamp. United are expected to promote an academy midfielder this summer to add depth, and Thwaites could prove why he can be that player.

Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven start together
If Carrick is to be appointed permanently, he will need to start looking to life beyond Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez. So, in order to do so, starting Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven together for the first time would be a good way to gauge whether they’re ready.
Heaven has been superb in the past few weeks, making himself a must-start regardless of Martinez’s availability. Meanwhile, Yoro has been hot and cold, but ultimately has fallen back to the bench.
Both have proven they can be starters right now, but United need to give them time together, and Carrick could do himself a real favour by starting the duo alongside each other to conclude this season.
United would thank him for it in the coming seasons; it would be less of an experiment and more of a trial.
Start Patrick Dorgu left-back
This summer, left-back looks likely to be a key priority for United to strengthen, with Ineos keen on Lewis Hall. But Patrick Dorgu may end up being a solution.
Despite enjoying success as a winger, Dorgu was signed as competition for Luke Shaw, and before the season ends, he should be used in that role.
Dorgu at left-back would get the best from Cunha on the left, overlapping and providing the threat that Shaw currently doesn’t. If successful, United could put the left-back budget to other positions.
Play Shea Lacey over Amad
Starting Shea Lacey would be a deserved reward for the wonderkid after his brilliant campaign for the U21s, but it would also give him much-needed experience ahead of playing a bigger role next season.
Lacey starting on the right would also allow Amad to step out of the limelight and come back fresh next season.
Lacey has already shown he can play at a senior level with his brief cameos, but he has earned more, and should get it now that the pressure is off.
This experiment would give Lacey the chance to prove he can be relied on next season to play a substantial amount, with more competitions and games.
What are your expectations for Shea Lacey next season?
If he can stay fit surely he gets plenty of minutes…🤔
Look to show his footballing ideology
Carrick has achieved Champions League football for United, playing a quick transition brand of football, which has been hugely effective.
But Carrick hasn’t been playing the football he wants to, more doing what he knew would get results.
Now, the pressure to win is off, so it would be good to see Carrick attempt to introduce his long-term vision to the players, which would likely be a more dominant possession-heavy performance.
This isn’t vital, but it would give fans a view of what to expect going forward under Carrick.
