Manchester United are advancing in talks to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson to kickstart a summer rebuild.

Reports from Italy claim that Manchester United are one step away from signing Ederson this summer, with the 26-year-old pushing for the move.

Ederson has put other clubs on pause to prioritise a move to Ineos, which should please the hierarchy at Old Trafford.

The Brazilian star is expected to cost £38m this summer, meaning he won’t be United’s marquee midfield signing, but he could be the first.

Ederson has an elite trait that suits the Premier League

There have been concerns raised about Ederson and his style of play as he is a fairly unknown name among the United fanbase.

Ineos want Premier League-proven stars and Ederson has never played in England. However, he does have one trait that could help him adapt.

According to BreakingTheLines, Ederson stands out above other midfielders because of his “immense” ability to cover ground and maintain his intensity levels.

In the 2024/25 Champions League campaign, Ederson covered an average of 12 kilometres per 90 minutes.

The Premier League is known for its intensity and elite athleticism but it seems Ederson is among the best in Europe at being able to cover ground.

Ederson would complement Kobbie Mainoo in midfield

Because of his athleticism, tenacity and defensive-first mindset, Ederson would be a brilliant partner for Kobbie Mainoo in midfield.

While Mainoo thrives with the ball at his feet, driving into space and dictating tempo, he needs a partner willing to cover ground when United are caught out in possession.

Mainoo has improved physically and defensively, but this season it has been Casemiro patrolling in front of the back four.

That is the role that Ederson would take, which would free up Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes to roam and play to their strengths.

Ederson is still yet to be tested in the Premier League, but his athleticism and engine should make him a good fit.
