Aurelien Tchouameni would be hugely exciting but Man Utd are missing the point with second target

Man Utd’s transfer mill recently went into overdrive as Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni became a concrete target, but things beyond him need adjusting.

The central midfield search at Man Utd has led them to Aurelien Tchouameni, with the club thinking he could be gettable.

Tchouameni comes with a huge pedigree and is as close to a guarantee as it gets for a non-PL proven midfielder.

He’s an exciting signing in all aspects and a no-brainer acquisition, if possible, but what United are looking at beyond him is not very good.

Man Utd exploring Ederson transfer

United’s template for overhauling their midfield is clear. They will buy a marquee name and add another less heralded name for lesser money.

Somebody like Joao Gomes has been mentioned for that second role, and the latest to be linked is Atalanta’s Brazilian midfielder, Ederson.

Ederson is not a new link, but his trail had gone cold of late as United explored more ambitious options on and off the ball.

However, he has come right back into the conversation, with recent reports linking him to United for a fee of around £45m.

His contract expires next summer, so the Italian side will undoubtedly negotiate, but despite that, he is not a player United should look to fill that second midfielder spot.

Ederson is not the answer for United

Tchouameni is an exciting name with a huge pedigree, but he’s still not PL-proven, so to get an entirely foreign midfield is a risk.

Ederson is someone who runs his socks off out of possession, but his progressive passing on the ball and the ability to create from midfield leave a bit to be desired.

As it stands, he looks like an overqualified Manuel Ugarte who’s also not PL-proven, which is the sort of unpredictability United can’t afford to splash £45m on.

He’s not the answer for United also because with Wolves’ relegation, a player like Joao Gomes could be available for less than Ederson’s fee.

Gomes is PL-proven, stood out in a poor Wolves side, would be happy with a squad role, and his playing style complements United’s current midfielders perfectly.

One marquee non-PL name combined with a dependable PL-proven rotational option is the way to go.

Ederson is neither, so United must steer clear of him. That ship has sailed.
