Whether or not Michael Carrick remains at Old Trafford, Manchester United’s next permanent manager faces one interesting dilemma around Bruno Fernandes for the 2026-27 campaign.
Bruno Fernandes has enjoyed a stunning run of form at Old Trafford in the second half of the 2025-26 season under Red Devils interim head coach Michael Carrick.
The 31-year-old Manchester United captain has registered 10 assists and netted three times in his last 12 Premier League matches during Carrick’s reign so far.
A key part of Carrick’s 12-match United spell has also been the effective dynamic between Fernandes and Casemiro in his tactical set-up since January.

Michael Carrick explains why Bruno Fernandes works so well with Casemiro at Man Utd this season
Manchester United fans have become all too familiar with shifting their eyes towards Casemiro’s location when Bruno Fernandes is hovering over a set-piece this season.
Casemiro is set to bow out of Old Trafford this summer, but not before the 34-year-old Brazilian enjoys his continued resurgence in form under Michael Carrick.
The former Real Madrid midfielder has netted eight times this season, with four of those efforts coming during Carrick’s reign in the post-Ruben Amorim era.
Carrick has recognised the importance of the dynamic between Fernandes and Casemiro and feels their relationship is both personal and tactical at times.
“I think that part of the game is building that connection and sometimes it’s a personal one and at different times, it’s a tactical one,” he told TNT Sports ahead of Man Utd’s 1-0 win over Chelsea.
“Sometimes on the pitch, you just have that wavelength where you understand each other in the moment and I think both of them have that.
“Sometimes it’s a set-piece and, other times, it’s another area of the pitch where they link up.
“They completely understand what the other player brings to the table in certain aspects of the game and what they like in certain moments.”
Where does playing Bruno Fernandes in a deeper role rank among Ruben Amorim’s mistakes?
Bruno Fernandes’ potentially limited pre-season tour with Man Utd will be critical for establishing a new dynamic at Old Trafford
United will need to use the beginning of the new Premier League season (at a push) or the summer tour (the best time) to plug the void left behind in the Fernandes and Casemiro dynamic.
Casemiro will be replaced either way with a new midfielder — a key part of Ineos’ transfer window outlook — but the Fernandes connection cannot be overlooked.
Fernandes has been lethal from set-pieces in the 2025-26 season and Man Utd cannot lose an important attacking element to their play in the following campaign.
The United skipper could not be available for the whole of the pre-season summer tour if Portugal manage to progress deep into the 2026 World Cup tournament.
But Fernandes’ ‘new connection’ with a Man Utd teammate in the post-Casemiro era at Old Trafford needs a foundation in place as early as possible for the Red Devils.
