Biggest deadline day win for Man Utd was £63m move that did not get done, Ruben Amorim in pole position for summer

Manchester United’s transfer deadline day was a quiet one compared to a few we have experienced recently.

The most discussed potential deal was a possible deal for Mathys Tel. United decided not to make the move, citing an expensive loan fee, and a desire to save funds for long-term targets.

In the short-term it does not help, with a goalscorer required to lead the team. Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund were both dropped in favour of midfielder Kobbie Mainoo for the game against Crystal Palace.

United’s search for a striker will continue in the summer, aimed firmly at Viktor Gyokeres.

Ruben Amorim’s promise to Sporting did not backfire

Ruben Amorim made a pledge to Sporting when he left the club in November, promising not to sign any of their players mid-season.

Sporting are still top of the league by six points, with Amorim expressing at the time he would not ruin what he had started.

While his new task at Manchester United requires instant help, Amorim did not go back on his word and recruit Sporting’s top stat Viktor Gyokeres, despite the club’s dire need for a goalscorer.

Viktor Gyokeres is the player Manchester United desperately need, and should consider worth waiting for.

There was a real risk in Ruben Amorim’s promise to Sporting. What if Arsenal, Chelsea, or another European club had swooped in to sign Gyokeres this month.

Amorim will be a relieved man that this did not materialize, and he still has a potentially favourable run at landing Gyokeres in the summer.

Viktor Gyokeres clause

Manchester United will be aiming to secure a move for Viktor Gyokeres in the summer, activating a clause in his deal.

Gyokeres has an agreement with Sporting that he can leave for £63 million in 2025, The Times reports.

Ruben Amorim will be well aware of this, it’s a deal that would be less than the fee United paid for Rasmus Hojlund.

Gyokeres is a player Amorim knows he can get goals out of. This season he has scored 34 goals in 33 games for Sporting.

United will stumble to the end of the 2024/25 season without him. In the summer, expect Gyokeres to be the number one target for the club, at a fee that could provide great value for money.
