Ruben Amorim thinks Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee share same problem at Manchester United

Ruben Amorim is back to winning ways in the Premier League, with Manchester United beating Fulham 1-0 at Craven Cottage.

Lisandro Martinez’s deflected second-half strike was the only goal of the game, in a Premier League clash with little to shout about.

There were some good and bad performances for Manchester United on the day. Harry Maguire for one was excellent, but players like Rasmus Hojlund struggled.

The Danish forward’s display epitomised United’s burning issue under Ruben Amorim – goalscoring. The Portuguese touched on this in his post-match interview.

Ruben Amorim on Manchester United’s goalscoring

Asked if scoring goals is a problem for his team, Amorim told TNT Sports: “I think so. Even in the second half, we wanted to change something, we lack some pace and power up front.

“But it is what it is. We need to have ball creators, more chances. We struggle a lot in these details. But winning helps a lot to improve.”

Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee don’t fit the bill for Amorim. What is strange is that Hojlund should fit the bracket of ‘pace and power’, but just hasn’t shown it under his new manager.

Zirkzee is an entirely separate problem altogether. Whilst Hojlund is obviously a nine, the same can’t be said for the Dutchman. He’s struggling to find a place in Amorim’s setup and was the same under Erik ten Hag.

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee must step up

The pair aren’t doing the business, and that’s not just evident to see, the proof is in the pudding when it comes to their statistics this season.

Manchester United fans are becoming more uncertain of Hojlund lately, but it is important to remember that he is still just a kid finding his feet at Old Trafford.

You can’t help but think that a signing like Viktor Gyokeres would solve Amorim’s goalscoring issue, but given United’s shaky financial situation, a signing of that calibre looks impossible this January.

Goals are few and far between for Manchester United – and that doesn’t look like changing anytime soon.
